What are your thoughts on having a virtual assistant?

I'm reading "The 4-Hour Workweek" book. The author mentions hiring virtual assistants for cheap from India/Mumbai to automate some of our professional & personal tasks even if you are not an executive. Tbh, I could see how having a VA could be helpful for some of my stuff.


So curious to know what are your thoughts on having a virtual assistant?

Word to the wise: Don't let your VAs sign into corporate tools. I watched in shock as our CISO at my last company had a meltdown as he found out a sales rep let a VA into our CRM and they deleted 3000 records.

They were helping with sending out sequences on behalf of the (very lazy) rep. They went to select a group to bulk-enroll and instead hit delete. They weren't malicious in doing so, but they sure did create a mess that I had to fix. They weren't fired, but it caused a lot of change in how we handled contractor and non-full-time employee access to tools and systems.

Oh wow, you had a very nice boss, I feel like that person would have been fired in most places. That's exactly why I wouldn't give a VA access to my work tools, a silly big mistake can happen.

What kinds of tasks would you delegate?

Mostly research tasks. For example, when looking for a new job I could ask that VA to do research for me based on my criteria. I could also see it for networking, it could be nice to have a list of people that I should network with that fits certain criteria.

I've seen some talk on LinkedIn about using VAs for handling some prospecting admin tasks. I wonder if anyone on here does this. Seems like it would not be possible to do so without giving them access to the corporate tools, which would not be possible without permission from said corporation.

Had a VA at a different job. Was awesome! All shitty admin got done. I was in the car all the time so I just called her an she basicly did everything non client facing.

It was a local firm here in Belgium. She did everything needed that was accesible to her. (the VA person changed a lot which was a bit of a downside because you have to re-teach everything)

The stuff not accesible to her was done by an internal assistant shared by 5 sales people.

same, at my job I have a lot of overheard with admin tasks. I do not wish to give access to my inbox or work tools, but I could pass prospecting tasks ahead of calls, help managing schedule (how tho), and how else? I need to think better about this
