What are your thoughts on sales scripts?

I've worked for companies where we were drilled on every sentence, every word, every intonation. And I've worked for companies where we were given frameworks and just kind of winged our calls.

What do you prefer, and what do you think works better?

What's better?

Scripts are like training wheels. You should eventually outgrow them but its okay to use them as training tools with a new company, for instance.

If you're forced to follow a script down to the last sentence, word, intonation, then you're not working in sales; you're in a call centre, at best.

I have scripts I started off with as a new rep, and still loosely follow. Words and intonation are important, so I don't think it's bad to have a script. However, reps should write their own scripts (with guidance from experienced reps/managers obviously.) Give them a framework of things that need to be said, but let them figure out how to say it in their own language so they sound confident and not like an awkward robot.

100% agree. The script shouldn’t be given to you. You should be given a framework that you then use to write your own script

Scripts are for training - real life doesn't follow scripts

Look a script is only useful if you have it as an example for your team to start off with it. They should use it as guidance to develop their own framework.

Sales Scripts are 1993 AF - I'm not a hippy type but I believe letting someone make their own version using the framework, or creating their own based on shit other good people say and do and their own intuition is the right way - I personally do a lot of freestyling - i do ok tbh

Sales frameworks, scripts are only OK as a start if you are new to Sales or will join a new company!!
