What do you do to unwind these days? (not drugs lol)

hi y'all, I've found myself to drink and smoke more during covid (obviously) but now that it's getting closer to the end and I am going out more, I still drink/smoke a lot more than I want to/should. Meditation does not work for me and neither does exercise. What do you do to unwind and still have fun/feel good when doing it? Serious replies are appreciated a lot more than shit ones. Love, thanks, be well!

Personally exercising is my outlet. I do a lot of activities that I genuinely find really fun so it doesn't feel like a chore to me. I work remote at home so I crave some sort of physical activity after a long day. I would try to find something you enjoy and want to get better at. I've personally picked up the gymnastic rings and Muay Thai. I suck at both of them but it's really satisfying to see myself improve day by day.

I even moved out of state for a couple months to walk along the ocean, etc. Still not where I want to be yet. Background: I used to be THE most motivated person on every team in the past. So it crushes me to be in this weird place now. Went to see a Dr too - he prescribed Zoloft. I haven't had the strength to go pick it up yet - I am hoping to find something less medicated (and only take Zoloft when I absolutely need to). Again, not a pre-existing condition at all, so I'm a bit apprehensiveย

As someone who has been on ALL the meds - sometimes it helps. Personally, I canโ€™t stand the constant โ€œlevelโ€. There are no extreme lows, but no one extreme highs either. How is that living?ย

May I suggest seeking out DBT therapy? Iโ€™ve done it once and Iโ€™ve been meaning to do it again. If nothing else, thank you for opening up and reminding me to seek it out again.ย

your willingness to be vulnerable has helped me, so I hope that makes you smile at the very least ๐Ÿ–ค

I understand the inhibition to medicate 100%. Sometimes life has you where you donโ€™t want to be, but there are as many mountaintops as valleys, trust me on that. You take care of yourself first to get to where you need to be, mentally/emotionally/spiritually. Iโ€™ll absolutely pray for the Lord to lay his peace upon you in the meantime.ย

Sign myself up for as many experiences as possible. Friends want to go check out a bar, golf, see a comedy show, etc: I'm in. Being with people doing leisure activities makes a world of difference.

Book an air bnb/resort for a Friday and Saturday night somewhere so it feels like a mini vacation and just enjoy the surroundings and change of scenery. Somewhere close enough to drive to after work on Friday and home Sunday, but different from your usual.ย

Bought a hammock for the backyard. Get yourself one and if you donโ€™t have the space go to the park with it and look up at the sky for a few hours. It does wondersย

Outdoor air conditioner and a canopy. Kinda defeats the looking at the sky part but better to be coolย

Exercise! I've really taken up running since covid started and it really helps blow off steam and clear your head in a healthy, productive way

I go down the Spotify rabbit hole. Find some new artists and songs is such a good way to unwind

Walk, run, take a hot bath with a bath bomb candles and champagne, call and check in on a loved one, schedule a pedicure or a massage, etc.ย

I just go do anything outside, with no music. I am the type of person that always listens to music at work, and has airbuds in while running errands, so unplugging for a few minutes and just listening to the sounds outside is incredibly peaceful.ย

Vitamin D is hugely important to maintaining mental health as well, so getting outside has that as a benefit as well.

We have a nature trail by our house, it's my dogs favorite walking path. Any time I need to unwind and relax, we'll walk down there and hang by the water for a bit. Nothing beats fresh air and a happy doggo.ย

Going outside for a walk/bike ride, listening to calming music, reading a book, petting a dog or watching the wild animals in the park (furry ones, not the local weirdos.)

Workout. It's the ultimate drug. And that's coming from a fat person who often forgets this lesson

I was not a very active gym attendee until I got into sales. I have found that after a frustrating day on the phones, or dealing with prospects, lifting has been a great way to blow off some steam. I say lifting, because I am not someone who enjoys running, or cardio, but lifting allows for me to get rid of some of my frustrations, while also releasing endorphins to help mitigate my stress.ย

If exercising isn't your thing, I personally recommend an artistic outlet. I am a photographer as a side hustle, and I find it fairly relaxing to be able to go out and take photos. It allows for me to approach things in a different view (literally and metaphorically), and when I produce some good photos, I feel a strong level of satisfaction. Artistic outlets are great ways to allow for the mind to be worked in a different way, that also helps relax and reorient you. Plus, whatever results you may yield, can be great gifts to friends, family, and even prospects (yes, I have sent prints of my photos to prospects as a thank you).ย

Thanks, everyone, for all the suggestions! Golf is something I've been meaning to try anyway, so maybe this is the time! Unplugging from headphones is another good one - I'll try to leave them at home when going on walks near the water. Signing up for experiences whenever I'm free is definitely a good one too! thanks again! Keep 'em coming

Getting a pair of decent sounding headphones and enjoying music again. On days when the weather is perfect, then nothing beats a walk through the local parks.ย
Also, good books are magic for unwinding. Combine a good book with coffee and being outside, I'm pretty much getting a hard on thinking about it now.ย

Not to be echo chamber. Exercise in the morning helps me shed some stress.ย

I feel an underrated combo is the ol hot bath and good music. If I had a particularly stressful day, I throw some Epsom salt in a bath and put on some of the my favorite albums ( Kid Cudi - Man on the moon or Plastic Beach by Gorillaz are the tops)

Smoking weed + going for walks. Plus I found that the more I stress, the less I'm effective I am while I'm working.ย

I find that starting my day with a workout does wonders - And then getting out for either some tennis, a walk, or other semi-active activities at the end of the work day

I like building/planting things. I do woodworking and gardening, mostly. I put on a podcast or audio book while I do it so no chance of thinking about work, stressors, the apocalypse, etc.ย
