What Do You Hate About Recruiters?

What's poppin' WR, it's been a minute.

Everyone knows that stereotypical LI outreach that you get 3 times a week stating that your experience "lines up perfectly with a new role" that doesn't line up at all with some shitty company that pays 1/4 of what you're currently making. Even as a recruiter, I still get these, and I wonder how these people don't understand how played out their pitch is, and why they'd still use it on another recruiter who probably uses the same gimmick.

Granted, this example is one of many common and general pitches. I have my own pitches and cater each message to the candidate, but I'm still curious - what's the main turn-off for you with recruiters? What initially causes you to question a recruiter's credibility?

I'm in healthcare recruiting, and as the vaccine mandates are rolling in, the layoffs are nuts. Thus, the labor shortage is real and our clients are offering extremely high rates for new workers. The market's hot as a mf right now, so it's also extremely competitive. Looking for any and every edge I can get!

I get bombarded by insurance agents who want me to come work for them in some capacity, and it's pretty obnoxious. No effort into finding anything out about me or where I am right now whatsoever.

The canned LinkedIn messages are so bizarre. Why tf would I want to take a 90% pay cut to come work for you?

Ah yes, another victim of the mindless spray and pray method. This is reason #1 why we're a hated breed.

That’s my go-to right now. Some positions are literally marked up 100% of usual rates so I’m putting the compensation in the subject line. The problem is other agencies are able to offer the exact same rates.

Ah, the fun part of figuring out the differentiation in that environment.    Nice problem to have with such sweet things to offer candidates, though.

Lol that's the kicker. You're right though. Good problem to have. Obviously much rather compete at 200% market value.

There’s a few.
- Not actually checking my profile at all. I’m in Europe and often get outreaches for positions for markets in languages I don’t speak. Everything’s on my LinkedIn. No, I don’t speak German so why send me a position for DACH?
- Not sharing the company name even after me asking
- Being mysterious about the salary range. That’s something I need to know upfront if you want me to engage
In the end, recruiters are sales people just like us with quotas to hit.

This right here. Never do they do their research and they hit me up for the dumbest crap. I’m an AE and I still get hit up twice a month for SDR roles

I mean fair enough but cmon now - we serve a large purpose in a lot of industries and are mutually beneficial in a lot of scenarios. The problem with recruiters is that 70% of them are 3 months out of college and have no idea what they’re doing. A good recruiter is a massively beneficial resource.

The 70% are giving the 1% a bad name. The only "good" recruiters I've worked with are internal ones at companies. I've never had a positive interaction with an external recruiter, aside from the joy I get in calling them out for their low-effort, un-researched, generic outbound.

Look all I’m gonna say is that when Miley licks a hammer in her underwear in a music video, it’s art. But when I do it in Home Depot after too much Kahlua it’s “something of concern in your background check and DQs you from this opportunity.” It’s bullshit.

Seductively sampling hammers at Home Depot fresh off half a bottle of Kahlua is a frequent substitute for competency tests in my compliance requirements. Show out or get out.

I don’t hate recruiters at all because they get me jobs. They do come across as annoying from time to time. Biggest turn on is when they’re upfront with salary and it’s true. Turn off when they talk about how great the role is forever and try to sell it to me.

CHEESE!!!!!!!!!!!! WELCOME BACK!!!!!

Are you in pharmaceutical or medical device or ERM? That's the curious part of me 🦊

What really grinds my gears about recruiters:

-Send blanket emails
-Don't actually read my LinkedIn
-Tell me to send them a resume for a job they won't disclose salary and total OTE

What it do Fox!!!!!

None of the above actually. On the recruiting side, we hire nursing and allied healthcare professionals. And then on the bizdev side, I'm just selling our services to hospitals, clinics, health systems, etc.

Those first 2 are symptoms of shitty recruiting and laziness. The latter is a sleazy tactic to try and draw you in before they could potentially turn you away with the pay package.

My biggest pet peeve is when they reach out about the next Pre-IPO Unicorn in the XYZ space that just raised $XXXXXM in Funding from THE TOP investors... but they don't tell you which company/who the investors are on the first message.

Good recruiters are awesome. Can help you source a sweet gig, tell you about the key players, prep you through the process, help you negotiate. The best recruiters I’ve come across were previously software sales leaders
