What does it take to be a respectable manager?

From personal experience I believe that most people who have been through bad experiences can understand the challenges of management levels and actually becoming a good boss is not an easy task. It requires a considerable amount of patience, hard work and integrity, qualities that must be strengthened, considering balancing the needs of employees, personal and company needs, which is not an easy task.

A good manager is one who not only cares about the people he or she manages, but also manages to keep them motivated to help them achieve the organization's goals.

Some tools that I have strengthened through experience that can support development, I hope you will take into consideration for personal growth:

Fair evaluations, Realistic goals and resources to meet them, regular meetings, motivational actions, teamwork practices, training.

The perspective of a good manager I think depends where you are in your corporate journey.  When starting out as a new kid, it was good to have frequent and close contact with my manager and support and coaching from them.  Id want them to be approachable and someone quite happy to help me every day, someone I could learn from (i.e. a leader rather than a "manager" as such).  As you move on and become more experienced and more independent in your role, a more  handsoff approach I think is preferred.  A good manager to me today is someone who is there when I need them but gives me the scope to do the job ive been given in the way I think I can do it best, a good manager at this stage of my career gives me plenty of autonomy.  But at the end of the day they are someone I can comfortably approach when needing help with something, someone who has experience to give advice or knowledge on something I might not be so confident with.  Similar to when I was a newbie, just less hands on.

TL:DR - a good manager is a coach who lets you make mistakes and then helps you overcome them in a way that only moves you forward.

A good manager changes by the person they are managing, and the manager is aware of that. You have to be flexible, proactive, and actually give a fuck about the people who report to you. Also, not being prejudiced should be a foundational part of that. Don't hire a bunch of mini-mes or your team will be shit, even if you are a great manager.

I have made several mistakes on my journey to becoming a "good" manager.  In the beginning I wanted to replicate myself as I was extremely successful in the AE position.  This led to a one size fits all management structure that didn't work with differing personas.

I agree with fair evaluations, realistic goals (and resources to meet them), regular team meetings, motivational actions, teamwork practices and training.

I also agree with the principles taught in:

The One Minute Manager (catch people doing something good - help them solve their own problems)

First Break All the Rules (manage everyone differently - don't take a one size fits all approach to interaction with each team member)

Sales Management Simplified (don't micromanage but rather look at performance > pipeline > activities when coaching).

To be respected to me is to be selfless, to hold accountable (fairly), to brag on your staff publicly, to not take credit for performance, to be consistent, to develop for their gain (not yours) and to be good at the job you're managing!

I always go back to being truly empathetic on this. Are you able to relate to the people you manage and do they feel like you have their back. If yes then you have the foundation for a great team and relationship with your reports.

100% do what you say you are going to do. If you can’t, aren’t sure, or won’t don’t say it.
