What has been your favorite negative experience of your career?

While studying in college I was a cool job as a receptionist in one of the biggest hotels in my city (if not the biggest) so we had a lot of celebrities stay here when they were on tour or vacation. There were several nights where I was the only receptionist in the hotel, and on weekends there were no managers working, so the receptionist made all the calls as the "nights weekend manager" (actual name).

One night around 12:30AM a cleaning lady around 65 called me through the walkie talky stating there was a massive emergency and needed my call asap. I ran to the top floor and realized the "Emergency" was in our junior sweet room (we had a well-known European soccer celebrity staying there who was mad because our presidential room was booked and he arrived with no reservation and we didn't kick our VIP out of the hotel for him).

The emergency was that he had pissed all over the room drunk and was knocking at the presidential room offering to buy it from our most active guest (he booked it around 15 days a month on average) so I had to call the cops, ask security to escort him and help dress with guy, while paying a bribe to the cops so this stayed confidential.

I was called on Monday (had Sunday off) sure I was going to get fired or something, the soccer player was waiting with the owner of the hotel who flew in form a different country. He apologies and asked for my silence, agreed to pay all the damages and thanked me for keep this silent. He gave me a great "tip" which covered my first car ever and I got a raise at the hotel. Just to be fired 3 months later for "restructuration of the hotel"

Got fired for being honest with the owner of the agency I worked for. I told him I did not feel I was prepared by their "training" program, and when I went to visit clients the senior AE didn't help me in any way. They told me to go get my things and "get the hell out".

Had a new job 2 weeks later that lead me to my start in SaaS.

I do believe honesty is they way to go, specially if you don't feel you are getting trained properly, since it will not only impact you but the company as well. That being said not everyone can deal with honesty. I feel like Karma got you the position you deserved at that time, we just have to keep pushing foward!!

Getting fired (almost one year to the day) for working remotely at my fam’s lake house instead of working at my home during COVID. Closed the most deals and had most new clients that month. Best part is my CEO/boss is a LinkedInfluencer and my NDA expires Thursday. May end up posting on LinkedIn about the experience. Being there was a drag and it freed me up to stop taking myself and my career so dang serious.

Please share on LinkedIn… I fucking hate most of the Influencers on there. None of them actually do the work they preach about 🤦🏻‍♂️ or all their stuff is super surface level and when you reach out they can’t Elaborate on what they said

I worked for a Bartender School for a while and some of the parties were legendary (good and bad).

The one that comes to mind is when we had our yearly convention, all the schools and HQ employees come together for a party sponsored by some liquor brand, DJ, drugs, the whole 9 yards. Imagine 200 or so 20-30 year olds being fed free booze with all kinds of other substances readily available. This particular time, the founders/party planners thought it would be a good idea to invite a tattoo artist to the party. This worked well for about the 1st hour or so, until someone decided to get a neck tattoo... poor guy was already pretty drunk and started bleeding from his neck, as well as barely being able to stand up. Clearly the cocktail of substances, plus a neck tattoo was too much to handle.

Grab the popcorn. I worked for an engineering firm for four years back in 2013, in the last three months, the manager decided to cruise, decapitalize the company and leave all employees (myself included) without salary for three months. Then he went on the run and now faces a lawsuit and jail - outright fun.

The dude from my home-town is headed to Federal Prison, so he's getting his due. But the fact that he faked tribal contracts just really irks me. Like, c'mon man, the native tribes have dealt with enough I'd say- especially considering the Trail of Tears runs riiiiight through my area.

I got fired a year ago. I sold software to the media/entertainment vertical and when covid hit all of my clients (Disney, Fox Sports, Viacom, NBC Universal) told me they would be on a spending freeze for 2020 so my pipeline was obliterated. They fired me 2 weeks before my biggest deal closed which I did all of the heavy lifting for. Didn't pay me my commish which was worth about $20k. It sucked and I was never paid my commission but had I taken proper legal action I probably could have recouped that money. Lesson learned.

Being knocked back from multiple job offers for not having a college degree. Even though several companies have taken me through 1-2 interviews before blocking me with that non-negotiable. The silver lining is that it brought me to the company I am at now where I hold an SVP position. The success I have gained at the company will put me in good steed to get great offers in the future despite my lack of college education.

I got a "promotion" to enterprise rep, and was told that the promotion comes with a comp change- less commish but higher base. Commission Plan was changed immediately, the base increase took MONTHS to get done.

After I had a garage sale to pay my car payment I realized it was time to start looking elsewhere.

This is when I learned that no matter how much a company can tell you or try to signal that they think you're valuable- the proof is in the pudding (or, rather- in the cheddar in my case).

My old manager wanted me to smoke weed with him. I said no a few times but eventually caved. Told him I didn’t want to get drug tested and fired for it. He said we would never get drug tested. So fast forward a couple months and we get drug tested, he’s freaking out, tells our National sales guy that all the veterans he hired have PTSD and smoke weed to get by. Surprisingly it worked however I never mentioned anything about my service or PTSD to him so I do feel as tho I was sent to the slaughter on that one and just somehow made it. He was actually a great boss that moment was pretty fucked tho haha.
