What if your company gave you what you wanted...

Would you still look for another job?

Sometimes we interview because we are looking for more money, and I have no problem with that. However, more often than not, the root cause for why we are taking that phone screen is because of something more intangible like a bad boss, a confining territory, or stagnation in our current role.

What if, instead of searching for a new role, you simply asked for the thing that would keep you there? Sometimes nothing can solve the problem, but what if they gave you that raise, or that new territory or promotion? Would that keep you around?

Would you ask for what you want instead of leaving to get it elsewhere?

My wife (who absolutely crushes it) set up a meeting with her boss last week and told them she really wants to stay there long term but she didn't feel valued and feels that she has been underpaid. One week later her boss and her are closer then ever and she got a $15k salary raise effective immediately. She never would have got what she wanted if she didn't ask first.

The power of "the ask" is...well...powerful! Good for her!

Call me what you want, just sign the damn contract
This goes back to what @funcoupons said. I think this can work with money but not so much in other areas. "My boss is abusive and this culture tolerates it" isn't exactly an easy thing to fix.

If the only reason I wanted to leave was because I wanted more money, I'd try and get it from my current employer. Much more preferable to having to start a new job.

But the other reasons why I'd leave (poor culture, don't believe in the product, don't agree with the processes, bad manager) aren't easily improved so I don't think a conversation ahead of leaving would be worthwhile. If anything, it would make my life in my current role harder because now the company knows I'm unhappy.

Culture is often irreparable, so I definitely agree. Partly why I left my last company--but I did ask them for what I was worth based on the market and they agreed to pay me...then reneged. I was gone.

Damn, well at least you tried... As a sidenote, this is why using a new offer against your current employer isn't as great of a strategy as it sounds.

Hell no--and accepting the counter is your kiss of death.

Yeah, you'll stick around but you'll never be trusted.

Missing the option "Yes and they refused to match". Story of my last move.

Ah, that is a key one--but seems to be the most common outcome. Even if they do match, and it's not a brokerage based business, I would tend to leave.

Leadership can't read your mind and there is only so much guided discovery someone can do. Ask for what you want. What's the worst that is going to happen? No? Big deal.
