What is it actually like working at Verkada?

I want some actual truth here about Verkada. How is it really working there? They are by far the most aggressive recruiters in my DMs right now. I get at least 2 recruiters (Int/Ext) each week. OTE is always different for the same position. My thoughts:

  • No diversity - All white males it seems in sales.
  • Why so aggressive? The recruiters and employees. I worked at the hottest startup in the Bay a few years ago and we were not like that, everyone came to us for the most part.
  • The breach. I know 7 employees there currently and they all literally deny it?
  • All the negative GD reviews claim frat culture which I definitely believe.
  • Their GD is actually pretty good (4.2). Is this a case of "Leave a good review and we will give you a gift card"? The negative GD reviews are suuuuuper bad. Which is telling me the positive ones may not be legit.
  • For a 1200 person company, 0.9 years tenure on Li is not that bad imo (this can't really be faked).
  • The employees always claim they are really SaaS and that they sell more software than hardware which is hard to believe. What is your security camera/access control software going to do without the hardware? My only problem with this is why not own that you are a hardware company?

I need some honest thoughts from current and former!

OTE is different for the same position?

My company is moving to this based on our geographic location. I kinda hate it- but flip side, I’d hate it if I lived in a HCOL area and someone in a LCOL area had the same OTE as me for the same job. We sell in person but don’t report to an office. So, it’s not like the job can be done remotely- but we are doing the same job.

I understand base. But shouldn't commish percentages be the same?

Fucking true @CuriousFox

@UserNotFoundI hear you on that but that is irrelevant in this regard. I have recruiters trying to place at HQ specifically and the OTEs are all over the place.

Hmm… I guess I haven’t thought of it like this yet- but technically I have a flat bonus for target attainment (achievement beyond 100% is a percentage) and that number is the same for all AEs. It’s base that is fluid based on geographic location.

I know 1 former employee there quite well and I don't believe he would endorse Verkada. I believe they have a very strong Product-Market fit however I am a non-believer on their sales philosophy and aggressive nature.

I worked there 2 years ago before they moved into the flashy San Mateo office and left during the pandemic (lasted 7 quarters) I was around all of the stories and witnessed many of it first hand. Stay away unless you fit the white male profile or don’t mind putting up with the toxicity to make a lot of money. Before they raised their Series C, we were legit making $400k per year and upwards on our W2’s. I’ve heard it’s heavily saturated now and not as many crushers hence all of the turnover. They don’t believe in PIP’s, instead they cut you at the start of the quarter for missing quota even just once. It’s a dope product but their sales team is lead by someone who has never lead anyone before and loves to play favorites. Hope this helps. Good luck cashing out heavy if you do decide to pursue the rocket ship. They do know how to pull a lot of talent.

They foster and source a very aggressive culture, from sales down to recruiters. I did learn a few new gorilla warfare tactics during my time there but ended leaving due to a conflict of interest. The money was great, learned a lot, but was not happy. It wasn’t right for me in the end. Good luck if you decide to explore them! They do have an amazing product 😊

Idk what it’s like to work there- but I sold Verkada for a VAR and it was an easy sale. More expensive than the competition I was often up against, but finance it right and it doesn’t matter. In my time at the VAR we had 3 different Verkada reps in about a year. Miss a single quarter and you’re gone.

One of the sales leaders logged into their own internal camera system and then set up a Slack channel to rate the women in their office. It got reported to the CEO and the CEO said leave or give us back some of your equity. They obvi gave back some of the equity, kept their jobs and nothing happened. CEO is on record saying they intentionally built a sales org after EMC (one of the wildest sales orgs to ever exist) and hired a bunch of d2 fratstar/athletes. Not a place I'd ever want to work.

Had a first round call with them and they are mandatory in office - assumed I would move to the Bay Area from the east coast. Was shocked there’s no remote options. They recruit a lot of medical device people is what I was told. Said pay is 140k OTE for mid market AE. I am white - played lacrosse in college and male so I guess that’s pretty frat culture lol. I am in medical device sales now and was majorly pitched as a hardware sales job. That’s my experience. My question is how far does 140k go in the Bay Area?

Yup, hardware. Which is very different from software.
$140k for MM is very low in comparison to the market. MM average is $160k and of course, you don't want to be paid average right?

If you are on target to your OTE, $140 goes a long way, even in the bay area. You won't be living lavishly but you decide your fate.

You can be modest and get a 2bd with a roommate and pay around ~$1,500/month. @$140k OTE, you will have ~$6,000/month to spend on food, savings, investments, travel, cocaine, etc. Of course it would be really nice to be making over $200k in the bay but if that ^ is not enough for a 20-something right now, then idk what is.

Heard it's pretty miserable. Camera's are back ordered, have to know months in advance to get a large order due to supply chain. Also mandatory in office.

Honestly, if they are that pushy that should be all you need to know. Desperation is a stinky cologne. To me, that means that they are churn and burn on reps. You’ll be looking for a new job in 6 months.

Every exec there has a scandal it’s pretty hilarious. 2 people fired today for faking POs (their equivalent of faking sales). They were veteran managers. Others fired for impregnating their ICs below, sexual harassment when drunk at parties, even the HR person got preg with another manager and had to have a shotgun wedding. Pretty laughable. It’s a drama to follow!!!
