That being laid off/fired doesn't matter all that much. I was petrified of that at the beginning of my career. Now? I can always just get another gig.

Just BE YOU, there are many different types of sellers who can be successful. While itโ€™s important to learn from others, donโ€™t try and be someone else, just BE YOU.

The value of being in an SDR/BDR role- it makes you a far better AE when you can generate your own outbound pipeline and understand the process for other SDRs.ย

I wish I knew that sales extends much further than retail jobs and actually presents great career opportunities.

It would have set me on the path Iโ€™m on earlier.

Longevity, stay in your first few jobs for a minimum of 2 years. A bonus: try to get a promotion at each place. sdr > AE. AE > corp AE. Corp ae > Enterprise. Chuck in a team lead, a senior or a management role and your laughing. Invest your time in companies early on in your career, by your early 30s you will be making 200k a year, no doubt.

Totally agree with this. Personal experience I took a promotion and then applied out to a promotion and got a job that I really needed more experience to do. Ended up bombing out and took a few steps back before regrouping.ย

I see BDR's bouncing around from company to company in a lateral role, next thing they know 7-10 yrs went by and they still grinding for the next promotion.ย

Not a veteran, but I wish I knew that there was always a choice you could make to sell without selling your soul, by being honest.ย
Wasted a good bit of my early time selling trying to be the dude who wanted to be one of em manipulative mfโ€™sย

Must take alot to look back and recognize that about yourself. I think the honesty factor is one of the best ways to build rapport with your prospects. Glad you're no longer dancing with the devil! Thanks for sharing!

At times, Iโ€™ve been way too honest that people would call it dumb, haha. You gotta be honest and still sell lol

Ah! How important it is to manage up, how everyone will play for their interests, so you gotta either align with it or find someone else. So many other things!

How much your network matters. I'm content with my network but I wish I would have doubled down earlier in my career.ย

Getting a warm intro or getting your application advanced because you know someone at a company (and they like you) is very powerful. I don't mean BS connections on LinkedIn where I barley even remember the person...but real meaningful relationships.ย

Don't decide to change jobs at highly emotional times (end of quarter, right after you lost a deal, new boss, new comp plan, new territory assignment, etc.). While you'll probably still make an emotional decision, don't be an idiot and leave something great because you've had a bad or uncertain week or two.
