What is your company's Leave policy?

I'm curious what different leave policies look like? The company prior to where I work now was AWFUL. Current company is so small we don't really have a leave policy, it's really relaxed (in the best way!). Whether FMLA, Paid, Unpaid, Maternity, Medical... I'm so curious what these benefits look like at different companies!

Previous company story: Maternity Leave

Told them I was pregnant at 12wks, they waited an additional 21 weeks to discuss what ML looks like. Highlights below:

  • Leave is unpaid.
  • Leave is not only unpaid, but I was cut off from all ability to make sales. Email password changed to lock me out, and was warned that there would be consequences for communicating with customers while I was out.
  • I had to write a check payable to previous employer for $1500 to cover my insurance expense since my leave was unpaid.
  • Leave was 8 weeks. I asked since it's 8 weeks unpaid- I'd like to extend to 10 unpaid... their answer was, and I motherfuckingquote "you're welcome to apply for your job when it's posted after 8 weeks"
  • Last but not least when asked "at what time do you plan to begin leave" I responded with "When I go into labor", which was met with "unless you get a bad attitude, then we will have you start early. I know how the end of pregnancy is and if you turn into a bitch we're going to have you go ahead and begin your leave"

Company was run by a woman with children, who was definitely allowed to have email access and make sales while she was on leave.

My companies policy is nothing like this. Sorry you had to deal with that what a ridiculous policy to enforce on a new mom about to give birth

What the actual fuck. Glad you got out of there.

My company seems pretty lax on leave - I've never had to take it myself before, but we've had people away for deaths in the family/personal issues and it's always been a sentiment of "they can take as much time as they need and we'll welcome them back when they're ready."

That is awesome @funcoupons! I am glad I left, it was certainly toxic- and I swear that a couple of the other people that work at my current spot and I swap stories and joke about workplace PTSD all the time. It's crazy how often I find myself trying to 'read between the lines' in my new role, and then remembering I don't have to do that here.

So your 2 week notice was 2 weeks before your due date, right? Glad you got out of there!

@POSitive hahahaha, I wish. At that time the husband was a stay-at-home dad so I stuck it out for a year after I got back, tried to put my head down and grind it out for a year and reevaluate then. Lo and behold I had a record year in sales for the company (more than any single rep had EVER done in company history) and still managed to make *less* than the previous year that included my unpaid maternity leave.

I Nope'd TF outta there pretty quick once I saw those results.

Is maternity leave completely different in the states compared to the UK? Maternity leave in the UK is normally 52 weeks depending on the company, salary paid in full.

WHAAAAT?! In the US companies are only required to comply with the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA). This act is only applicable to companies with 50+ employees and it provides up to 12 weeks in a calendar year to care for yourself or a family member upon illness/medically necessary recovery, etc. The ONLY thing FMLA does is protect your job. The company must bring you back at the same job, or similar level if the same position has to be backfilled in your absence (can’t demote you). No pay included, only job protection and only if they have 50 employees.
