What is your go-to workout?

I typically hate workouts. I don't like physical labor, and do my best to control my diet rather than ever break a sweat.

BUT a few months ago my teenager and I started Jiu Jitsu together. He doesn't know it's a sneaky way of spending time together when otherwise my teenage son would cringe at the thought of dedicating an hour a day to his mom.

It's gotten me pretty excited about developing this skill, so I want to know what your favorite workout is? Anything cool I should be trying out on BJJ off days?

so many people get hurt at crossfit. also, the peloton is a "meh" from me and I have one. I'd rather be outside or actually DOING something.

@Tres Yes and no, CrossFit isn't my jam, but mostly because I don't like to work out. I need something that fitness is a byproduct. That's why I'm loving Jiu Jitsu- it's a mind game that you get fit from.

The outside thing depends where you live... in the winter months here there's no way I can be running or biking outside, but in the summer I can see your point.

@Tres I'm from canada originally, so you can still find things to do outside that involve fitness!

you absolutely can run outside - you just need the right gear.

maybe ice skate? shovel snow for elderly people? run around the neighborhood making inappropriate snowpersons?

You can get hurt doing any athletic activity. CrossFit isn't inherently more dangerous than anything else. It's up to you and your coaches to manage load, technique, etc. Just my 2 cents.

SKWATS - no matter what your primary focus in you need to be able to properly squat. Barbell, kettlebell, whatever it doesn't matter.

Air squats are a fundamental movement. 3-year-olds squat better than anyone in this room--time for y'all to get better at it.

I like to rollerblade in skate parks for extra cardio. I also hate workouts, but enjoy physical labor. Know what I hate more than anything?

Looking unattractive.

So when I go to the gym I make sure to wear clothes that are too tight and highlight my fat rolls and are basically unflattering in every way. So when I look in the mirror, I get pissed and give all the extra pushes until I can't anymore.

Be careful doing a sport without a baseline fitness, though, as you're 90000000% more likely to get hurt.

also, you're so right. Luckily the BJJ school I attend takes warm-ups and safety seriously.

I would hope so. A lot of the drills do increase the baseline.

But just remember that if you don't have muscles  to support your joints/ligaments/tendons, they're gonna take the strain instead. Don't be afraid to tap out early until you've built up enough to take it.

Trying to break a sweat everyday, that’s what is most important I think and it doesn’t matter how. At least couple times a week I go to lift some weight at the gym, at least once a week go hiking, running, cycling. What matters the most is breaking a sweat.

Lol I feel you but that's a start. My dad is 60. He starting a proper workout 7 months ago. He was able to do only 4-5 pushups. But now he does 50 in a go. Start small. You will get there eventually

BJJ is a hell of a workout on it's own! But any type of cardio is going to help out with BJJ, fighting is way more tiring than you can realize.

In that regards I hate cardio that is long and steady, I can't do things I like for longer than an hour so running for that long is out of the question. I'm a big fan of group classes since that can be a great way to push yourself harder than you would on your own and without having to come up with a workout. Also general sports and activities (like BJJ) that are a great workout but also enjoyable on their own.

Nice stuff also with the BJJ, that's a cool mom move right there!

Download the shred app, literally tells me exactly what to do every day and has an endless amount of options. I also find that I don’t put much thought or planning into the workout so it saves me time as well to put focus back into work and hobbies and other things that make me money or happy.

I used to do pushups at my desk pre-Covid when I had a call I could have done better on

But generally I do the most basic bodybuilding split. Diet is more important for physique.

Treadmill, max incline, 3.3mph 40 minutes. Low-intensity interval training.  High calorie burn, low effort and can do work while doing it.

Calisthenics - pull-ups, push-ups, L-sits, hand-stands, bodyweight rows. Requires a minimum of equipment. Don't worry, you will not spontaneously grow huge muscles, but it will work wonders for muscle tone.

Outside of standard weight lifting, I'm big into cycling. Due to Covid + Winter weather it's hard to get motivated to go on a bike ride so I bought a smart trainer, highly suggest if you have the cash and a solid bike already, it's like having a peloton but way cheaper and better because you can take it off the trainer and ride it once the weather warms up.

The trainer has been a real god send when I don't feel like working out because all I have to do is hop on it and I can turn on a TV or something, super easy to fit in during the workday on slow days too.
