What makes a good sales person?

I asked this to the sales manager at the company I worked for when I started in sales he said:

"Most people will be happy to buy from someone who is pleasant with a good sense of humour"

Lack of fear, thick skin, magnetic personality, grit, smart enough to know what they’re selling and have the ability to translate that into something which is easy to understand. Also knowing how to read the room.

It’s a great starting point. I lead with laughter quite often, but like @Incognito said, read the room to determine whether or not it’s appropriate.

Be an expert on them, or your product. Best to be both. If you don’t know them, ask a ton of questions.

Regional Sales Manager
The ability to mirror and build some rapport with a prospect/client to put them at ease and lower their wall of insecurities about speaking with a salesperson. The more they lower that wall, the more that a salesperson can actually get valuable information to solve their customers problems with a valuable solution.

Can bench press over 250, drive a nice car, don't listen to what the prospect is saying because they're usually wrong, and consistently see a therapist once a week to rid you of your demons.

A sense of humor will go a long way too, although i've seen very successful sales people who almost never laugh, and cannot make anyone laugh.

Actively listening to the customer, consultative approach, focusing on solving the customer's problems, not features/functionality. Know their industry, develop great relationships with partners and folks in the industry. Most importantly, don't be afraid so say "I don't know" or any variation of "I'll get back to you on that"

Own your pipeline.  Good reps are in control and operate their deals, and they know how to pull on high level resources in their own company to make shit happen.
