What makes a great sales manager excellent?

I my experience:

they need to be effective people managers that are driven by data but not to the point where it abstracts them from the fact that their team are human beings that want purpose and clear direction but are also governed by their own individual motivations and priorities.

Great Sales Managers and Sales Directors are rare. Treasure these unicorns.

In my opinion the most important thing a sales manager needs to be able to do is help get deals 'unstuck'. 

That's really the main thing I'm looking for in my direct sales leader.

- Wanting to see their reports grow and succeed. 

- Willing to help out when needed, and doesn't ask employees to do anything they wouldn't be willing to do themselves.

- Sets clear expectations and has clear communication skills.
