In economics (what my degree is in), there's a study about emotional response in games - i.e. your reaction when you lose versus when you win.

If you were given $5, your emotional response would be less of a difference from your baseline than if you were to lose $5. We as people inherently hate to lose more than we love to win.

From my experience In collegiate sports, love to win triumphs hate to lose. The difference is if you love to win you will go out each and every day to do your best and get the best results. If you hate to lose you focus so much on trying not to fail that you don’t focus on winning and you perform “timidly”. Not sure if I explained that well, but as a sports example:

In baseball if you love to win, you are sending a runner from 3rd base in the bottom of the 9th with 2 outs tied game on a ball hit to left even if you think there’s a chance he gets thrown out at the plate.

In the hate to lose situation, you hold him because you don’t want to take that extra chance incase you fail or make the wrong decision. But now if the next guy strikes out and the inning is over, you sit there contemplating if you should have taken that risk and sent him for a chance to win. But you were to caught up in hoping you didn’t make a bad decision. Didn’t want to win bad enough bottom line

Don’t play or perform scared because you don’t want to make a mistake and lose. Play for the win, take the risk, deal with the consequences

I love to win.

Losing is a part of life. One needs to be able to recognize that and come to peace with it when it happens. If you’re constantly living and/or selling with the “I hope I don’t lose” mentality, you’re already stuck in your head.

In sales, a drive to win and the confidence in your ability to make it happen is what sets reps apart.

I may be alone here, but I propose a 3rd option:

I enjoy the process. I don't see anything in life as a "win" or "lose" - I see every experience as something new I learned along my path to steady growth, both personally and professionally.

And I was a professional athlete for 25+ years.

Does that big win feel great? Of course! Does coming in last in front of a huge crowd suck? Absolutely!

But if you only view life in a win/lose scenario, you're going to be a miserable human. You have to get out of seeing things on such a short term timeframe. What is your ultimate goal? Work towards that, and it makes the wins a little sweeter and the losses hurt a little less.

You went big here, Incognito, and I love it. You're absolutely right. If life is a constant jump from extreme to extreme. satisfaction and happiness can be hard to come by. Aiming for contentment in the journey is probably the best way to go!

The thought of making more money than all of the teachers and school administrators that told me I was going nowhere after high school. And at the end of the day, I have them all beat already. No plans on stopping any time soon.

I think most everyone on this forum would say they hate to lose, but the wins are what keep me going. For me it is about finding the balance of letting the losses push you but also enjoying the wins when they do happen.

I think they go hand in hand. We all love to win and hate to lose. When I win a big deal/game/anything, it will only make me want to win more/replicate that feeling.

If i lose, it will drive me to change tactics in order to win and not lose the next one.

It’s not about one or the other, it’s about your response to winning and losing that will ultimately make you win more.

I think that's a fair point. For me, I like to learn from my losses and move on quickly, so I don't get bogged down in a negative headspace. That's why wins keep me going.

Great point as well - part of it is how you take the losses. Not getting bogged down for awhile is a huge part of it. All comes down to your mindset!

We all have good and bad days, weeks and months - what gets me back on the horse is the challenge of taking down a big deal where the odds are impossible...and of course the $$ at the end of the race!

We were talking about this on another post but more than winning or losing, it's being left the fuck alone. I'll get over wins and losses but peace of mind is wonderful.
