What position would I be best at?

So I just quit today(finally) the automotive industry. Background is 3 years in the sales floor as a typical car salesman. I got promoted into a company where I do the Lease & Finance contracting over the phone. I talk to customers, pull credit, structure the payments, negotiate, and finalize contract. A to Z the whole transaction. Have this role for 2 years under my belt being in the upper 30% of the company.

Now this is for more of an account management role down the road since they are majority leases and people swap out every 2 years. Though I’ve been taking leads and closing. My deal gross to me is about 3-7,000. And I do about 7-10 of those a month with a decent payplan. But I want to do something new and work from home.

Thoughts or advice for me? I’m actually super excited to try and get some type of remote job and possibly make more.

first you need to really decide what the ideal career looks like for you.

- what type of product are you selling?
- who are you selling too? (B2B, B2C)
- do you want to do new business sales or renewals/account management
- Do you know what industry you would like to be in?

think through as much details as you can, that will help you narrow down what companies are a good fit, and help you understand what companies to look into.

I know if like to get into something in tech or services. I’d probably take a paycut for a year or two but it is what it is for starting something new

Too broad. What kind of tech? What kind of services?

yep I agree to make this easier for your self, i would think about what kind of tech.

if you get an interview they will ask you why you want to work for them. you need a better answer than "i want to be in tech"

Sounds like you would be a good fit for a BDR or SDR role.

If you want to try and avoid that, which I don’t suggest, check out Automotive tech companies like CarGurus or Dealer.com. Your floor experience may make you qualified for an AE role out of the gate.

This was going to be my recommendation -- others in the space include Autoraptor (CRM/automation to help manage car sales people). Are there any tech platforms specific to auto that you are used to using?

I think you would enjoy a SMB AE role which would be realistic to get, however you will get more rejections than interviews. Just going to be honest since the market is competitive.

I highly recommend networking and connecting with people to get referred. You mentioned tech sales, do you know any current reps that might be open to referring you?

Not sure why you quit without something else to go to. Seems very shortsighted.

You also havent stated what you want to do, just that you don’t want to sell car leases any more.

Finally, remotes does not more pay. It can mean less sometimes. Depends on the gig.

Good luck in your job search.

Smb ae or sdr.

Super competitive job market right now with all the layoffs. Make sure to figure out exactly where you want to work and try alternative channels, like LinkedIn or cold calling hiring managers.

Just to be that person:

If you quit your current job without a plan and without realizing the impact that layoffs have had across the industry you're hoping to get into: you need to start doing a LOT more research into the marketplace, and now is a great time to start. It's a challenging time to get started. Not impossible, but definitely challenging.

Glad you're here, but there are some hard truths in tech/software sales right now.

That said, there are some lists on this very site of tech companies that are hiring, if you do a search.

Getting into software might be challenging but not impossible. You for sure have to start as an SDR and if your persistent, might end up getting an SMB AE role which can be a good start to learn and earn but that would come with some cost that Kosta mentioned. You might get more rejections. There are too many tech enabled companies in the Automative industry that are trying to expand like crazy and some are with great valuations. Think what you want to do.

What do you NEED to earn for the next 1-2 years. What do you want to be earning in 5 years? SDR is for sure the next step if you want to get into SaaS. Real Estate, Insurance, Financial services are also options if you can live on next to nothing to get started.

@poweredbycaffeineis on to something. Figure out what SaaS companies are behind all the tools your dealership used. Go to them first! Might even land an AE role.

Sounds to me like you could slide into a sales role in just about any industry. I'm not sure if you have a college degree or not. If you do, certain industries would be available to you (e.g. commercial insurance sales, pharmaceutical sales, medical equipment sales). If you don't have a college degree there are still many, many sales roles that --most likely, do not require it (e.g. business product sales like corrugated cardboard, plastics, etc.). Inside sales would likely be easier to get into right out of the gate-- with outside sales being an option after you have some inside sales experience. As far as working from home, many companies are still allowing it. You may have to take a team meeting at an office here and there but the day-to-day WFH is a realistic option at most companies ("thanks" to the pandemic).

Agree with most of what was stated as the BDR role is the best fit for you, as it's gonna be nearly the same as you've been doing at your last job, much of luck!

First mistake you made is quitting your job before having a new job. even worse, you are not sure what you want to do, so you could end up taking a shitty job because you need income.
I would very quickly determine what you want to do and focus your job search only in those areas. if you take a wide range of potential job interviews, you will be in the dreaded non-committal space. research, refine, focus, and go after it.
