What programs or advice do people have for breaking into a more specialized vertical like FinTech or Cybersecurity sales?

  • are there bootcamps worthwhile
  • is this something you start small as an smb and work into
  • is communicating the cross-over from past experiences enough
  • do you need to find a mentor to learn from first

I worked in private market Saas and infosec compliance/ cybersecurity Saas and really itโ€™s like any other industry just the material is extremely dense.

The answer to this depends on what the company youโ€™re looking to work at does.

Because fintech and cybersecurity are so broad you could be learning stuff that is completely unrelated to what the company youโ€™re looking to work for does.

For cybersecurity understand basic frameworks (and what a framework is) like NIST Cybersecurity Framework (CSF) or ISO27001 would be a good start

If you have more specific questions in regards to what type of cybersecurity or fintech feel free to dm me

This!! It covers a lot!

Learning never stops, if you think bootcamps/podcasts/1:1's with industry leaders would help answering a few questions that you probably get stuck on in an interview? Go for it.

Thank you @BasstheBear , super good info. Definitely vast!

@Gasty, both verticals are pretty isolated and like you said dense. There's obviously tons of upside if you find the right product market fit and the right areas to learn.

The combo of the Fintech + Cybersecurity markets seem like a future-proof bet imo.

Don't need boot camps. Some basics are helpful, but they'll train you.
Best way to break in is to find company you're interested in and get referred.
Most will take a flyer in SMB/mid market for a good seller, even if they don't have industry experience.

I have changed industries many times and I have always had success just communicating how my skills crossed over.

One of the hardest things about both of those verticals is WHO you are selling to. If you're used to selling into Sales Dept or Marketing or HR, you need to prove you can build prospect into and build trust w/ CISOs
