What questions can you ask to see if your future manager is actually a good leader?

So toxic bosses are unfortunately more common in sales than other professions and Chris Orlorb is doing all the posts on QuotaSignal about questions managers can ask to make sure they are getting a good AE.

However, what are some questions AEs can ask to see if their future manager is actually a good leader? What are questions they can ask to uncover toxic leadership behavior?

This is a great post! Here are some of mine:

1. why did you decide to get into sales leadership?
2. Look at their linked in, see how many years as a rep they had, and ask them about it. ("I see you were a rep for 3 years before getting your first leadership role, how and why did you make that jump so soon?" Or "why did you wait 12 years before becoming a leader?"

3. What are some of your core beliefs as a sales leader, that you think help you?
4. How did you learn to be a good sales leader? ( ive been asked before "who taught you to sell?" so same kinda question)
5. How have you handled reps that consistently hit or exceed quota?
6. How have your handled reps that underperform?
7. Can you tell me a story about how you were able to make a good rep great?
8. can you tell me a story about when you helped an underperforming rep improve to where they hit quota consistently .
9. How do you know you need to hire more reps?
10. Have you ever had to fire someone and what happened?

How often do you communicate with your reps? Do you schedule one on ones weekly or monthly?

Always ask and give/request specific scenarios, this is will allow you to get away from their theoretical answers and to the true grit of it.

In addition to questioning the leader, ask to visit with some top performers and a new hire.

Great comments here, I will add my $0.02. I always ask the hiring manager to describe the sales culture at the company, and as a follow up ask them as a manager to contribute to sustaining that culture. This question is open-ended enough to get them talking about the org and their management style without you leading them to a particular answer you are looking for. I also always ask about team performance against quota and what is contributing to the success/struggle and what they are doing to support performers and assist low performers in achieving quota.
