What’s the most lucrative industry for a sales rep?

***In your opinion***

I feel like the general consensus is software sales but wondering what’s your thoughts are on this.

💰 Compensation

Right now I think software has the most opportunity but I know plenty of people who do just as well if not better than most software sales reps selling heavy machinery, telecom, or something like that. It just depends on the company and how they comp their reps.

Comp plans are going to vary for sure.

I have a friend in elevator sales that does very well

Software is probably it right now. But don't sleep on healthcare and cybersecurity. Bonus points if the product fits into more than one of those categories.

Cyber security software for the healthcare vertical FTW lol

Software makes sense the overhead for is limited to updates, support, bug fixes and storage (if it’s hosted in your own cloud)

Sales reps for mutual fund and life insurance companies do quite well.

In Canada, they make $85K - $300K depending on the sales incentive/commission structure (SIP) and performance (hitting/exceeding sales targets)

My aunt actually started off in similar sales field - sales for benefit programs. She made a killing in it

You mean like employee benefits?

us on the P&C side equate them with marketing with all their webinars and hand holding drum circles 😂

Haha, why's that? It's a lucrative field with lots of upside, given they've become such a huge attraction and retention tool.

I don't work for one of the big guys though, we do bespoke benefits for mid sized businesses and aren't publicly traded.

She started off working at Monroe shepell and just kept going up from there. Bounced to different jumps every 2-5 years. Her sales cycles were like 6 months to year and they were with big companies

Except you’re virtually always in a pyramid scheme. Imma need to find the Reddit thread.

mid market commercial anything STARTS around 100k US and many go much higher than that.

Why is no one looking at insurance? Getting licensed takes 3 weeks max. If you can do a quarter of what you’re doing now, you’ll be making a healthy six figures quickly. AND THEY ARE REQUIRED BY LAW TO HAVE IT AND RENEW IT EVERY YEAR.

Agreed. I’ve been in insurance for 7 years and clear a very healthy 6 figures number every year

Did not even think of the Insurance field - but that is a good one that will always be around unless it gets automated in some way

I'd say software right now. Cybersecurity or the healthcare vertical.

Monster put out a good post about this

Consulting salesBase Salary: $120,000 to $250,000Commissions: $25,000 to $3 millionCompanies that sell their expertise to other companies recruit high-GPA students from select universities. They love club leaders and sports-team captains who live to win. “Obviously, they would prefer somebody with accounting knowledge, but it’s not always the case,” says William Gaffney, a recruiter with Amaxa Group in Dayton. This is an eat-what-you-kill environment, where the biggest commissions go to those who bring in the biggest contracts.Find consulting sales jobs on Monster.

I know it is odd, but true professional sales people make a killing doing in home sales for remodeling companies. 10-11% commission plans on sales, and depending on the product/service, average tickets are easily 55K+. Even smaller remodels with an average ticket of 25K; if you sell 2-3 a week you're still well into 250k+

I think getting into the finance sector on the sales end right now is an excellent sales industry. Compensation is phenomenal, uncapped commission. Lot of hard work but I do mortgages and I love it. I run my own show. Wealth management is the same, very lucrative but you need to hunt and have a process. Be able to identify a target market and build an extensive network referral relationships with other business professionals.

Real estate but on the side until you build up your network. Stay as a BDR/SDR for full-time work, the job is literally training you to do cold outreach.

It's from Chris Voss' book "Never Split the Difference." Prompting a no response makes the prospect feel like they're in control.
