What’s the worst comp plan you’ve ever heard of/experienced?

I've seen a comp plan that paid a single payout of 25% of 1 months subscription (MRR) for a very sticky product.

How cheap can it get?

Once I was paid like a nickel per prescription written. Commish check was $1.75. That was my first and last start up.

I lived it for a couple quarters before jumping ship. 2.5 years is a long time, live and learn.

the worst Ive ever had was this:
average deal size: $10,000
I got paid a % per deal ( i forget the number but it was like 6%)

then, I would only get paid once the company got money.
It was my job to get the customer to pay!

This would take weeks if not months, pushing deals into the next quarter.

then if the customer paid monthly (which was most common)
I would only get a % of the monthly deal.

so instead of closing a $15K deal its like i closed a $1,250 deal every month......

my last place tried to pay half my OTE as an undefined 'great' bonus at the end of the year. with only a 1.25 accelerator no matter what.

Just saw a company offer 5% of ARR. seems low to me

But my 25% of MRR is the equivalent of 2% of ARR lol

Depends on the what the ARR is.  5% of $10k isn't much.  5% of $1m aint bad.

3 factors in comp:  ARR, TCV and a services number.   If you didn't hit your services number, you were ineligible for accelerators on your ARR, which was the only metric they claimed to care about.

They had to retract the plan after a quarter due to the uproar.   We didn't have enough people on our own services team both pre-sale and delivery to support what they'd set up.  It was a disaster.

First BDR gig. Would only pay on closed opportunities and they had no strategy…

My last company cut your residual commission by 50% if you failed to hit your quarterly quota.  The only way to get it back was to get to 150% of annual quota.  I started sending out resumes the next day.

20% of OTE will be given in february the following year after hitting 75% of quota for this year. Not terrible to implement after reading this. but they labeled the document "stay" bonus lol
