What's wrong with today's job market?

Just did the math on job search advice and it's pretty depressing.

Someone applied to 800 jobs, got 1 interview. Even spending just 20 minutes tailoring each application = 260+ hours of work for one conversation. Another person applied for 384 jobs and only got 4 interviews.

The traditional advice isn't wrong, it's just built for a job market that doesn't exist anymore.

Wrote about why this is happening and what actually works instead.

Anyone else feel like the standard playbook is completely broken?

Too many people applying for jobs they're not qualified for led to screening processes that have become overly rigid and eliminate good prospective candidates before they even get seen by the hiring managers.
Best way in is networking - and leveraging personal connections. Same as it ever was, but extra important now.

Aren’t you the one who built a job apply app? Bro- go peddle it elsewhere. Nobody’s clicking that in here.

Although you are posting something that is worth engaging it's clearly to push a platform for your benefit and for that reason you earn this BOOOOO!!!!!

I had a similar experience, applied to over 700 jobs over 6 months in Canada. To be fair I mostly looked for remote and I don’t think the 9 year gap between university till now in a “corporate”style role (summer sales rep for a liquor company) helped my cause.
I know the networking was super important so I consistently did that and asked for internal referrals while looking for entry level SDR/BDR roles. I still received only 1 interview after I already had my current role and this interview happened a few months after I applied for that role!
I truly had more luck with recruiters reaching out to me for roles (even ones I thought I was grossly under qualified for) than for anything entry level.

For context I included my professional sports experience, my “sales” experience at the sports performance gym i partially own, and my MBA in finance were all included on the resume.
If you are up-skilling while applying it isn’t so bad, I found it made me way more confident entering into my current role!

Obviously everyone has different challenges and pressures that may affect them, I’m just speaking to my experience with my latest search!

The role I’m in now was only because I knew someone at the company. The last role I was in, same thing. The role before that was because I applied literally minutes after it posted.

Unless you’re gamifying ATS systems and circumventing them, there is no use if there’s 100+ applicants to a job.

Just remember a lot of these recruiters have zero desire to follow up and will just ghost at any opportunity.

I believe it's two things:

1- The middle management role is getting COMPLETELY axed for a variety of reasons. So what this has caused is the previous middle manager to apply for a bunch of AE or IC roles that they gladly would have never applied to before.

2-It's just more competitive than it has ever been. More remote friendly jobs means that it naturally is going to have access to a larger talent pool=more applicants; no longer are the days of only searching for a type of person in a geographic region.
