Yeah, I heard. I want to boomerang back to Okta because SMB AE is my ideal next step. The internal promotions as an SDR were tightened and extremely difficult to move up since the new Fiscal in 2021. And of course the huge change in GTM / Leadership, etc.

I can’t take anything with me. I have 401k bc it’s free money. I’m paying for my kids colleges & I have whole life insurance on myself for a juicy windfall. IF my company takes off and I can exercise my equity, I won’t need anything. That’s my play cause I’ve put everything into it anyways. Gotta see it through.

For sure, look up "bonus depreciation" and "cost segregation" too. Helps to offset some of your income.

Look at Self-Directed IRAs and Self-directed 401k's too if you have a spare 401k from a previous company. Tons of loopholes ;)

Check out the budgeting app YNAB (You Need A Budget). It's a premium app meaning you have to pay for it (like $13/month). I was super skeptical about this business model, but it changed everything. Saves me way more than I pay them.

One of the few services where I'm actually happy to pay them. Try out the free trial to see if it helps!

Construction insurance and surety bonding.

Surety bonding is different, though, because you don’t get paid unless they win the job and they can bid as little or as much as they want (depending on capacity) - but jobs are awarded and often don’t even start for months and also often are multi-year contracts. We also get 40% of the fee vs 10%, so a bond for a $1M job is roughly $10-20k in fees and my commish is $3-6k. Some firms are good bonding accounts and not good insurance accounts, and Vice versa. It’s much more difficult to do bonding, as it requires a firm grasp of construction financial accounting. It’s also a credit product vs an insurance product and so many more nuances. Good bonding agents are often CPAs and have their MBA as well.

TL;DR - it’s a sweet gig if you can get into it but lolz if you’re trying in NY and don’t know labor laws. Also, no one uses technology so good luck with research.

Typically BDRs/SDRs are paid on meetings exclusively, whether that is meeting shows or meetings that turn into qualified opps (however your org defines that).

I have honestly never heard of a BDR/SDR getting commission only on revenue and not on meetings at all. It's an interesting model!

I do have some anchor deals that consume roughly 33% of annual quota but new customer adds are critical in my growth segment. Lots of breadth management with partners is what helps me stay sane and they will typically carry 6 of the 10 deals I need quarterly.

50K base + 1.2% uncapped, OTE at quota (1.2 million) doesn’t even get me to 70K. Average deal is sub 10K (big deals are 40-60K). Selling high tech electrical test and measurement solutions to massive industries (EV, battery manufacturing, utility etc.) I built my pipeline and am now a consistent 100K+ per month earner, but I’m wasting my talent here, because I’d be a goddamn monster in SaaS sales and thus looking to transition for the right opp.

It's definitely not impossible and you're in the right place! The war room. :) My recommendation is to join a cloud services company, like Crayon. They're based in europe and have people all over. Or work for Megaport, another international company. So you work your way through the ranks, and then transfer to an international office. Then you apply for local gigs or find a company that pays US salary based anywhere. I started with 45, then 60, then 67, 73, 90, 115 over 5 years. Fuck loyalty and company culture if you cant pay your bills. People tell me I job hop, and maybe thats true, but guess what, now im making 100k + so I don't really give a shit what people think.

Very cool. I’m very familiar with the business model #Apple - but I’ve never met or heard of someone actually selling the services.
.
Tbh I assumed the names involved and the $-figures were so high that the OEM would have long standing relationships and multi-year if not multi-decade contracts with the manufacturers. Just approach them directly without the need for a salesperson, but the more you know. That actually sounds like a cool gig!
ryan_howard
Politicker

It’s really a case by case basis when it comes to how the OEMs source. For mega customers like Apple, Cisco, etc there are long standing relationships but there are still AEs (called GAMs in the industry) who are solely responsible for managing and growing the account) I’ve done this role too for a $100M casino gaming machine OEM, it’s a pretty brutal role tbh as you are often delivering all the bad news and leading tough negotiations. While the senior leadership will have relationship there are still ground level guys running all the models and doing the grunt work with the mid level sourcing / engineering guys to prove the site is ready. Also the factories are terrible at communicating so there is a need for somebody to bridge the gap between site and customer.
For new logos there are a lot of mid size companies (300M - 5B revenue) who start with small EMS players and scale up with the tier 1 guys like Flex / Fox / Jabil. That’s where I’ve had the most success is pulling smaller publicly traded OEMs away from smaller manufacturers and diversifying them out of China (to Malaysia, Vietnam, Mexico) which de-risks their supply chain and keeps their board happy with less supply disruption risks (while still keeping costs down)
It’s been a good gig. I’ve had good leadership and have grown from intern to director level in less than 7 years so opportunity has been ripe for those willing to learn as most the employee base is old (but smart) boomers. I’m lucky to have been at a tier 1 the whole time, I know the lower levels can be ultra volatile and cyclical.
