What's your benefit package like?

Curious about how other industries tackle this, as I've had some serious health issues this year.

I want to know why does Dental coverage suck so badly in the US?

right!??!?!?!? I'm lucky because I got veneers back in Canada forever ago and don't have issues but my partner's teeth are A MESS.

I know nothing about US coverage haha.

Dental coverage often blows in Canada because it's one of the most expensive parts of a plan...everyone has teeth, so everyone's going to use it. Also, a LOT of dentists take full advantage of clients and insurance companies, which doesn't help with the cost of premiums.

@CuriousFox as an insurance professional myself (however, I don't do EB like @funcoupons ), one can only assume its because the coverage is viewed as optional and there isn't a large enough of a risk pool to offset the potential losses.

Carriers have to protect their margins.

Thanks for the reminder. My work brain is on now lol

@funcoupons I'd also wager that folks in Canada are more likely to seek care, as they aren't used to wondering if a health issue is going to bankrupt them.

Great example:

recently had to have a series of endoscopies (thanks, work, for the bleeding ulcers!), and you know how much they charged for *each one*?

OVER $40K.

I had four.

Ugh, that's brutal. I honestly don't believe that universal healthcare is the answer, but know the US healthcare system is absolutely fucked...

I'd agree that Canadians are more likely to seek care.

@Incognito I know that pain. I was charged over $1,000 for a pre-endoscopy appointment. Glad I have insurance.

Our insurance is decent but not amazing. $60 specialists co-pays really suck. 401k is decent but not amazing. As somebody who has dealt with a lot of health issues, look for four things:

1) Maximum spend
2) How vast is your coverage network
3) Can you go to doctors by your choice or are referrals required?
4) Deductible

@CaneWolf i wish I could double upvote your comment.

when I called the clinic, they ligit said “oh it doesn’t matter what we bill for($25k). It could be a million dollars. It doesn’t effect you. And this is just the doctors fee. The three other separate bills are for the facility ($5k), the anesthesiologist ($8k), and lab fees ($2k).

Co-pays all over the fukkin place! 🕺🕺🕺

Dental insurance is a scam. Dentists charge you as much as they know a carrier will cover and then some. Usually there isn’t a rhyme or reasons behind charges other than dentists trying to maximize profits. Companies are out there trying to change this and hopefully will soon

Same shit happens in Canada. I think most dentists are swindlers...

I can’t really think of anything that our benefits plan does not have. Medical, dental, vision, 401(k) match, fitness reimbursement, cell phone reimbursement, several different types of life insurance, etc. I feel pretty lucky about that!

I have a pretty average plan, given I work in the benefits space...I often wonder why we have such a lackluster package. It's one of the things I feel management could definitely improve upon. It is better than nothing though.

It's weird, honestly. It's not like the plan is total shit, it's just very average. They do pay 90% of premiums though, so I can't complain too much when I pay only a few dollars for what I do get.

In addition to the usual 401(k)/medical/dental, ours is pretty unique – we're all remote so we've got stuff like:

- $1000 yearly home office stipend
- $400 travel stipend to go visit someone else at the company
- 35 hour work week

I feel good about my premiums, 401k etc.  Definitely would love a fitness reimbursement etc.  I mean, all of us don't work for Coinbase/Basecamp :)

Basecamp CEO said 'it's none of our business what people do at home' basically.  They did away with gym reimbursements and other personal wellness benefits, considering them 'nudges' to personal behavior.  :)  Both companies also banned certain conversations (political/social)... My ref was to the wellness benefits, of which I want many more lol.

banned conversations at work? I can think of something political right now that will help me close deals - to whomever with whatever political or personal beliefs (looking at the Biden administration's renewed focus on environmental regulation. Trump let everyone pollute as they pleased, now you're gonna get fined for operating that way).

If reps aren't having these discussions, another one will.

I don’t hate healthcare. I love healthcare.

I hate the way a few old white dudes literally profit off the death, misery and suffering of other humans.

And I’m originally from Canada too.
