What's your LinkedIn pet peeve?

First time poster, long time LI comments creeper

Besides marketing people...what irks you the most about LinkedIn?

For me it's the 'internship selection announcement' as if they're a highly recruited collegiate athlete committing to Duke's basketball team on ESPN.

"After much thought and abundance of options, I've decided to commit to Deloitte's internship program for the summer of 2021. I want to give thanks to my parents for helping me along the way, my girlfriend for being the only one that loves me, and my bros for being there when others weren't"

I'm just a hater because I spent my summers working at a taco stand but i'd love to hear your LinkedIn pet peeves

All of it?

But if I had to choose, a tie between:

1. Copy and pasted sob stories. I've seen the same "struggling candidate who had to run to their interview in the rain because they missed their bus but I gave them a chance and they ended up becoming the best employee in the company omg so inspiring" story over 9000 times now.

2. When people post about their good deeds...if you want to do a good deed, just fucking do it. No need to post a picture of yourself giving sneakers to a homeless person. So narcissistic.

There is a BIG difference between, I was struggling and this person helped me vs this person was struggling and I helped them.

The worst part is no one calls out the BS, because it's LinkedIn, not Facebook. So people will like and comment stroking ego about how amazing it is.

Isn't all political commentary relative? Nothing is truly true or truly false, otherwise, all parties would ultimately agree on one single truth.

In addition to the great examples you provided:

1.  Symbols in the name (e.g. $$ John Smith $$)
2.  Anything other than job title in the headline (e.g. "Mentor, Leader, Digital guru")
3.  "I want to test something out, click like and comment 'yes' if you see this post."  Could you be any more transparent?

Along these lines would be tagging 4 - 5 people to increase your viewership and to get those people to like because they were tagged. What a joke...

2. Is absolutely my biggest pet peeve. The phrases guru, ninja, sherpa etc do nothing to communicate what you actually do. Everyone uses these titles so how are you suppose to determine an associate engineer from a senior one?

It would be much more clear to to put your actually job title - Senior Account Manager - with the tagline "I help (customer profile) create/implement/steamline/whatever their (pain point) using xxxxx.

@HarryCaray well fuck. Would you hate Tractor Maven? I really like tractors. I can operate them better than most people. And I sell insurance to tractor people.

“Property and Casualty Insurance Broker/ Surety Bonding Agent” is so general. People would think I work at State Farm
😂

But I completely get where you’re coming from. There are so many dumbass titles.

@JordyA  you could use a shape emoji instead of a “|” to separate titles?

Is this. STOP DOING THIS SHIT! If I have to open your post to see your full response, I'm scrolling past. Stop hitting return a thousand times before you add value. If you got hired and didn't provide value within 3-years/3 return button hits, you're gone!

People who post about how bittersweet it is to leave a job after 18 months and how much they'll miss everybody are awful. Even worse if they end it with a cliffhanger on where they're going next ... follow along over the next couple weeks!

This might irk some people the wrong way, but when people tag multiple people on their post, just to boost their views. If there is a valid reason to tag people, then I'm all for it. But to tag people for the sake of tagging people, that's when it gets annoying.

I hate the general concept of "social selling." LI influencers are rarely the top of their field, they're just rewarded by the LI algorithm for posting consistently. The whole thing is a huge ego trip. As an individual rep, I hate how fake I have to operate on Linkedin to essentially butter some of those people up. The whole "sales needs to socially sell and make their brand/produce content" seems exhausting and terrible for work life balance.

Overall, it's a good platform but people are abusing it.

No clue. That's way out of my wheelhouse. I think it's just a systematic problem with any social media platform. There's monetary incentive to work the algorithm for the influencers and the platforms want more activity.

Polls. Some polls are actually good and useful, but a lot of people are using them to fill the "gaps" when they can't think of what to post and need to post something that day.
