What should I do?

Hey guys, I have a question regarding two job offers that I am currently assessing.

Offer #1

  • SAAS startup
  • Nice culture & good leadership
  • ICP: Sales & Marketing people
  • Salary 75k + 10% commission => probably end up around 85 - 100k
  • Long term perspective: depends on growth

Offer #2

  • Robotics
  • Culture seems nice but very serious
  • ICP: CTOs, Technical Leads, People who are responsible for workplace safety
  • Salary 90k + 5% commission => probably end up around 110 - 150k
  • Long term perspective: tons of opportunities => they just got a huge funding

I have worked in the SAAS environment so far and wouldn't mind sticking around given my experience and network; however, offer #2 seems pretty interesting too.

The only thing that keeps me from accepting offer #2 is whether I would enjoy the robotics / technological environment as much as the "trendy" SAAS environment or not. I think their product is excellent and all, but I have never worked in the said environment and am not sure whether I would set myself up for failure given my lack of expertise, network etc. I am also not confident whether, in the long run, this could evolve into a real passion of mine (robotics in general).

Any advice from the people here who are a little bit more experienced?

I am usually very loyal to the company, so jumping ship just for a couple of years doesn't make sense for me.

PS: I didn't apply to those jobs; they were offered to me because I know the VP of Sales at both companies.

I'd go for #2 because it's unlike anything I (or you) have done. It's also a future-proof field that has unlimited applications to the growth of the modern world. Also, I value a higher base and a more serious leadership team because I know I am secure and the team won't take shit from low performers/let their culture get corrupted.

Good input, thank you very much. But what if I end up being a low performer, given my lack of network & experience in Robotics haha?

I've never relied on my network to sell as soon as I arrived at a new spot--if I sold them my last solution then they are unlikely going to buy the competitor or something adjacent. I think that "nice to have" bullet on a job description is such shit.

Show up, learn the industry, hustle your ass off and become a high performer. We all have to start somewhere all over again a least once in our careers.

You always have to start from scratch. Imagine apart from getting into new market you are also prospecting new set of people + getting them in your network.

Things will take time (no quick magic)

#2.  Personally, I feel the SaaS environment is going to turn.  That said, I think it's less about what you sell and more about how you sell.  Are you tasked with working with clients and closing deals or are you tasked with prospecting to try to get meetings?

Plus, robots are cool.

I would be responsible for generating leads at the beginning. Later on, if I have proven myself, they would be able to move down the funnel so that I would get to close deals.

I like robots too, but I am not certain whether I would fit into the relatively cold & calculated tech environment with all those smart guys.

Plus, I would probably have to change my whole outreach approach and start from the bottom again. I am not afraid of that but they are super performance focussed so that might be a problem if I don't perform right off the bat.

It sounds like option 2 is the better short term and long term option, right? This sounds like something unique, and I feel like SaaS will always be around while this is something different.

So switching, later on, wouldn't be a problem in your opinion?

No, since you have SaaS experience. Most SaaS AE positions I've found want someone who has sold SaaS so honestly as long as you stay sharp on sales you should be fine to do what you want.
Plus as you mentioned you already have an in with a VP, what's to say you can't build/keep other relationships to get you in the door at other SaaS companies down the road.

Robots sound like a really cool thing to sell. You also dont need your networks to sell, im sure you didnt have a network when you started at your current role.

Try something different, worst case scenario you hate robots and can come back to the SaaS world.

Call me what you want, just sign the damn contract
I just don't like start-ups. #2 seems like something legitimately interesting that's happening and making a material impact on the future of a lot of businesses.

A very underrated aspect of sales is gelling with the prospects. I'd dig into who you think you'd mesh with to see where you should go.

Also, and this is kind of dumb, flip a coin. If it comes up with option A and you have a unshakable urge to flip again then you probably really want option B

I'm inclined to say 2 as well, for reasons stated eloquently by others here.

No marketing, mayo isn't an MQL
Automation is a hot space - Had a robotics company in my final two when I was looking for my last role.

Ended up going against it as the other role offered me the more immediate opportunity.

Interesting space though and definitely good money.

If you can see yourself doing well with the role/leadership/culture then I'd go B

Go with the Robots! Just don't let them take over society like in the Will Smith movie, iRobot.
