What to say on first cold email?

During my first cold email, I find it hard to make it not awkward and make it interesting for the client to hear what I have to say.

I don't want to be another "Hey client, my company helps companies like yours, hear me out, etc." on their inbox. I know that this doesn't work anymore, so I am looking for other ways for them to be interested in what I have to say.

I would love to know how you guys approach this situation. Your responses would really help me out. Thank you so much!!!

so im not the best when it comes to prospecting but all I can tell you is how I approach it.

subject lines:
make it a question
Include their first name
be creative

Ect:
mike, quick question
Do you deal with this too Emma?
Jasmine, Is leadership aware of this?

in the body I would focus on the problems they have and how you solve it. Make it as specific as possible.

So instead of "how do you manage expense reports at ABC Company?

Make is: How are you solving for the exsessive miss catoization of expenses? Groups like: X,y,z were seeing X amount of money wasted because of this problem.
Im curious to learn how you solve this.

Let me know if you want to know how X.y,z companies solved it and Ill send you a one pager about it.

ending it with an easy call to action, thats NOT a meeting request is not a bad idea ether.

there is alot to unpack here so let me know what other concerns you have

Whatever you do, don't start with a d*ck pic.

In all seriousness though - think about what would get YOU to respond and start there. I'm not a fan of starting with a cold email - I prefer calls - but you need to bring business value from the start. I also like dropping names:

Hi X,
We are currently working with <company similar to theirs> and have delivered <2-3 bullet points of real quantitative value> . We feel we can bring the same value to you.
Can we have a brief conversation to share what we did with them...

Nothing is 100%, but I find this works as well as anything.

First lines must show you are talking to them specifically, not a bunch of similar people in a list scrapped from LinkedIn.

With automated outreach becoming a commodity, what people hate is feeling they are yet another person in your hundreds of leads sequences.

First lines must make them feel unique, show that you deeply care and did you research

This mean doing the grunt work of actually explaining why youโ€™re reaching out specifically to them - for example, I sell a multichannel sales automation platform. As an icebreaker, Iโ€™ll look into the company, analyze their potential ICP, and reach out mentioning that multichannel outreach makes sense for said specific target audience and asking how theyโ€™re managing to get in touch with them so far - no pitch yet. Just an open ended question, based on actual research

Basically, itโ€™s about showing that Iโ€™ve done my research, and theyโ€™re are not just another line in my outreach database

First line (and subject) are crucial to making it clear it isnt an automated email. Focus on hyper-personalizing for really good customer profiles, for average ones personalize to the company.

Ex:

Hey Dave!
Saw youโ€™ve been in the SAAS industry for 12 years, Iโ€™m sure youโ€™ve seen a massive change in how __ operates. Curious if your teams are still burdened with manual data entry after all this time?

Companies like xyz realized the true cost of that, leading them to explore (your company/product).

Just an example but youโ€™re showing that you researched the person, that there is a REASON that you reached out to THEM and not just because theyr on a fat list. Has a pain point, a question, and reference companies. Give something like this a try.

Highly recommend that you follow the company Lavender on LinkedIn. They post incredible content about creating compelling emails (I don't work for them, BTW). I have been in sales for many years and I have been extremely successful using only cold emails for initial outreach. including several +$1M deals. You can do it! Just takes practice to refine your messaging.

that's worked for me well so far: ask for a conversation first + try being genuinely curious about how they run things, and what their processes look like. identify if there's a problem and then go in for the pitch

Hi X. You are probably going to hate me because this is a cold call. Do you want to hang up now or role the dice and see what happens next?
