What types of benefits do you look for when joining a new company?

Trying to do an analysis on how to better improve the benefits package at my company. We historically have had poor benefits, and this is thankfully changing. What benefits do people look for? I've already done an internal questionnaire, but I would like to see what the savages look for!

EDIT: US based, but company has international presence, so any suggestions from anywhere welcome!

Benefits with a good copay/cost share. A health spending account/wellness account is ideal.

Decent PTO balance, three weeks is the bare minimum. If I changed roles tomorrow I'd be requesting four.

If you have people who WFH, giving them an allowance to buy some decent office equipment.

Thanks for the input! Any insights on a decent wellness account example?
If they have an office space available but CAN work from home, would you still allow a small allowance?

Really depends on your company's budget, any amount is better than nothing. If you offer a comprehensive benefits plan, an additional $500-$1000 for gym/lifestyle expenses would be appealing.

If WFH is a choice, a budget for equipment isn't required. It's a nice offering if you can afford it but don't feel compelled.

That makes sense. Our HQ location has gym in the office building that employees can use free of charge... should non HQ employees be offered something similar? Bearing in mind they have a standing invite to relocate to HQ.

Yes definitely, offering a gym reimbursement to those not at HQ would be a nice gesture.

My previous company had free healthcare for the employee and it was a pretty good plan. The biggest thing I actively look for is 401k match tho.

Thanks for the feedback. What sort of 401k matching do you think is fair/competitive?

I think between 3-6% is pretty average! I know some companies will only match like 3% until you've hit your year anniversary and then bump it up to a 6% match, helps ensure people will stay!

That's fair enough, we do 4% and I think it's low, so an upgrade after a year or some kind of loyalty play makes sense.

Good health insurance is my big one. That's a big indicator to me of how I'll be treated. And they gotta match the 401k to at least some degree.

Do you think ESOP should be for everyone? Our company is pretty restrictive with it.

If you have work from home employees, make sure they get an adequate stipend/budget to spend on equipment.

Quality desk (standing desk for the win) along with quality computer and internet/phone comp.

All seems trivial on the surface, but a good employee will utilize these to benefit the company.

Thanks for sharing. When you say retirement, do you mean a company sponsored pension plan? I find that more and more rare...

Yea that is more rare for sure. I guess it depends. I wasn't real clear on this, but my point is more that the basics are pretty standard right. 401k being the most common for retirement, about a month of PTO when you start, things like that. What helps my evaluation is those extra things not everyone has. I have friends that work for a company that pays for basically their entire daycare cost and they have a fund of up to 13k that employees can draw from for out of pocket expenses. To put that into perspective we paid over 14k in daycare last year. That alone would automatically put the take home much higher than what is listed..along with whatever medical expenses.

That makes a lot of sense. Hopefully we'll get there one day. For now 401k and 17 days of PTO are what we have to live with.

A quality PTO policy. With little vacation the last two years, I've really come to value the time off

For the US, what would you consider quality? We have 17 days PTO and that increases 2 days every 2 years, topping out at 25 total.

20-30 days is really solid, IMO. I’m okay with a lower number if PTO can roll to the next year. I’m curious about unlimited PTO. I feel like anyone who abuses it would be performance managed out of an organization

We have the ability to roll over into unlimited years, which is really nice. I have never experienced or even heard of unlimited first hand... Yeah I guess that would be the case.

I'd feel too restricted living off my base. I'm about to buy a property and asked my manager if I should only factor in base in my budget.
