WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

I have been working for my promotion for 2 years now.... & I finally got the green light from my manager and director to start interviewing! Good news, right?

Well... the team I had been networking with has no headcount.

Here are my options:

1 - Stay in BDR and wait another 3-4 months for this team because it is the only position I can move to to get an increase in my base pay.

Risks: If I miss my numbers in BDR even while in limbo for promotion, I can lose my eligibility.

Risk #2: If I wait for this team, there is going to be an even larger number of BDRs interviewing for the same spot. I asked I if asked if they will hold a spot for me if I commit to them and wait, but due to internal politics they will not commit.

2 - Interview with different teams, with no immediate financial gain (same base, higher OTE).

Risk: Because of differences in pay structure between positions, I will actually be making about $2200 less per month until I start closing my own deals.

3 - Start looking for outside opportunities

Risk: I would lose out on the opportunity to have AE on my resume for a very respected company (future job security)

I will still need to learn the second half of the deal cycle and DO NOT want to be a BDR again. I have paid my dues and I am ready to learn more.

I donโ€™t like your odds purely based on the fact that you only listed 3 options in the poll but you have 8 numbered bullets. That promotion is slipping away already, Johnny.

But seriously, you know what to do. Work all the angles and apply to different companies for an AE role. Something better presents itself, great. If not, you know youโ€™ll get to make your case internally soon enough.

The bullets threw me as well. LOL.

And I agree with this approach entirely.

I just realized that the formatting changed when I posted... and even when I go to edit, the (a, b) changed to additional numbers... sigh. Anyhow, I fixed it.

Did I miss this in the post? Why canโ€™t you be the first member of the team with no heads? 1st head.

I think he/she was saying there is no headcount open for the team they want to join. So they either join a different internal team or wait and risk competing for the desired internal team (if/when headcount opens)

If youโ€™re hitting your numbers, but undervaluedโ€ฆleave.

Another very respectable company will see youโ€™ve paid your dues and throw you at AE

Split between 2 and 3, you want the AE title and sometimes the best way to get that is by leaving either your team or your firm.

You sound like a good person and a hard worker. Hereโ€™s my advice with some context: Iโ€™ve been in a similar position where I wasnโ€™t a BDR but I was an AE that was interviewing for an upmarket role for a new specialty product team. The company was extremely political in their hiring decisions. I was #1 globally in sales that product the team specialized in. Shouldโ€™ve been a no brainer right? Did great on all interviews and even found a way to help them prospect that no one else could (they used it LOL). Get to the final meeting with the manager and he said I wasnโ€™t getting it because of a minor mistake I made in the panel. Come to find out that they really just wanted to hire people at the HQ office. Thatโ€™s how stupid some hiring decisions are. Anyway, if theyโ€™re making you jump through hoops for a position that youโ€™re truly ready for I would dip. Politics makes it even worse for you because thatโ€™s subjective af and out of your control. End story - that team ended up having insane turnover because the manager was a nightmare and they changed their comp plan for the worse. It always works out!!!! You have nothing to lose. Resume builders are overrated. Itโ€™s what you accomplished during your time and your story that counts.

Go for 1st option and if they didn't commit based on the 2nd risk, start for looking somewhere else simply cuz they didn't keep their word and didn't keep the position for you in that case!

2 years at the same company? Dude they are cucking you. How is your performance and have you put in the work to show the AE hiring managers that you will be good on their team? Itโ€™s half performance and half positioning. You said respected company so maybe this is more about timing then performance, sounds like salesforce where they donโ€™t have much business need for promotions. Just be patient and follow the process because if you cause a stir they will make you pay for it
