What would you do differently, if you were sent back to your first day of your sales career?

Oh god. My first sales role I had a comp plan where I earned 20% commission on all deals I closed in an industry where it wasn't uncommon to sell $50k/month... at 22 years old. So I would have worked harder on closing deals instead of trying to do anything BUT work.

I spent so much time dicking off, avoiding making cold calls, focusing on what was wrong with my product, hesitating to email prospects, etc.

I just wish that I had focused all my energy at work into closing deals and getting good at my craft. It took me probably 2 years to really hit my stride... by that time I was working for an F500 company making substantially less commission.

I would have stopped listening to people that have no idea about the realistic career prospects in sales and I would have taken my fate in my own hands a little bit more to research this avenue more thoroughly because I didn't even have any awareness around how lucrative B2B Software Sales can be early in my sales career.

Grab lunch with the lowest person on the leaderboard and listen to their thoughts - and if you ever catch yourself thinking like that, get out

I would have started asking for help and finding help (i.e. reading books, listening to podcasts etc...) immediately.  It took me a few years to realize that in order to make this a career I would love (and make mucho $$$$) I needed to take my sales education into my own hands. I also would have dug into company values and how the company lives up to them.  I know a lot of that can be BS, but finding a company that actually lives up to its core values and follows through on its promises is like finding a $20 on the sidewalk - you can't pass it up.

I would not take advice from the people who got let go for not meeting their numbers. That advice set me back for sure.

quit immediately and work somewhere less toxic. it's hard to spot sexist/otherwise challenging enviroments right out of school.

I am 2 months in to 1st BDR role. If i could start over it would be to learn more about my company, watch more webinars, and learn my products. Makes you confident no matter where the conversation goes on the phone

I wouldn't have naively worn polyester suits. It was the 1980's and people still smoked in the office. :)

Do you have to do comp corrections at the end of every sales month because the reporting and finance team never get it right?
