I answered I don't care, but provided they get the work done and all then I don't care. If it's a problem then I care because it impacts me

Agree here. Only caveat being time zones and being customer facing can make that difficult.

However if buddy lives in London UK and holds Toronto business hours, more power to him.

I know I wouldn’t wanna fuckin 3pm-11pm GMT

just not sure its a safe move now - Once American Troops land on the beaches of Quebec, on the way to conquer Greenland. I'm not sure anyone's safe. Will I have to change my handle to old quebecois? I'm just so uncertain about all of it.

One of the guys I coach moved abroad. Was in Miami now lives in South America.

He’s the top producing rep. Makes all the meetings. Doesn’t have customer complaints. Is able to fly to required in person meetings.

Company doesn’t care. The travel is more expensive, but they believe in this guy.

What the issue with your scenario?

No issue as of now. I have been doing this for 5 months but did not tell anyone. hitting my quota, all great, I am happy, the company is happy. But they mentioned in a company wide meeting that employees working abroad for more than 30 days should get HR approval.
So, I'm just concerned they will find out.

It won't be in person as of now. Even if it was, I am thinking of just getting the tickets from the town I supposedly live in and just pay for the tickets there out of my own pocket.

They are saying that because of tax implications. Where you are located is considered your home for tax purposes. If it's uncovered later, it opens the door to tax fraud on their part and potentially yours.

I would highly recommend you do some research on this to have your bases covered.

No need to meet clients. Contract was pretty standard for a US based employee but doesnt mention a specific location to work out of.

I am very curious about the story behind this question. Just what did you do?
champchamp

Yeah, that is why I have not said anything because if they do not know, then no harm on them.
I basically just packed my things and said "Fuck this shit I am out" and moved without telling anyone.
The plan was to move back to the US, and still is. I'd just like to be here for the rest of the year if possible.

The reason I moved is to help out my mother with a few issues and then I just stayed. I help my mom with a lot of things, which is why I prefer being abroad but I'd move back if necessary.

I am the one doing it, have not been caught but want to see what might potentially happen if I were to get caught.
I am hitting quote every month and my manager has mentioned she is very happy with my performance.
My only problem would be HR being a pain about it, which is why I have not told my boss since she would be required to tell HR and IT.

I had a team member move without notifying me first. Didn’t really care but you would think to notify your boss even if the job is remote
champchamp

2

I did not notify my boss because I know she would have been required to tell other people at the company like HR and IT, so, more people getting involved and more chances of someone denying it.
Based on my interactions and relationship with my boss, she would be completely cool with it, but HR might make it a big deal and denying the request.

From a work performance perspective, if meeting required output, available as necessary to complete scope of responsibilities and operating at a level in line / above others, then no immediate issue.

But if my direct report, it would create trust issues. It's an unusual situation and to knowingly hide it might make me question what else is being hidden by them....I'd also be disappointed that they felt compelled to hide it rather than being open / transparent (seek prior approval)...and maybe that's partly on me for not creating a culture of openness. Also have to consider the precedent being set (if allowing it once I'm aware) and whether there are any legal / tax / employment law implications that might expose the business to risk.

One of my key aims is always to be consistent...in my previous roles, I couldn't operate with a high % of the team being remote in a diff country/timezone and so to be consistent and fair to all, I'd require this staff member to return to the US within a realistic timeframe. But if your model is different and can support all remote (and HR approves), then fine...but I do think you should be proactively upfront to limit loss of trust.

That makes sense, thank you for sharing that. To be honest, I would have no issues sharing it with my direct manager, I think he would be completely fine. My issue would be that he will be required to ask HR for approval and they might not approve it.
Regarding the other factors, I am performing in level or above the rest of the team. Which is another reason for which I believe my immediate manager would have no issues.

Soooo, I was doing this. Had a slightly bigger time zone difference. Didn’t impact my work, showed up for everything and more. No one knew. When I got laid off with 30+ others and shared with some of them where I’ve been working from, they were all shocked and thought it was the coolest ever. I had to show up in person ~2-3/yr. Also had a company laptop so figured out some VPN logistics without having to download anything directly to the laptop. Pretty stressful at first but cared less as time went. My manager wouldn’t have cared, executives prob would have. I applied for, interviewed and landed the job all being abroad. Wouldn’t recommend it but pretty stoked to have pulled it off.

In this digital world with widespread comms, the world has become more accessible even if you are remote. To me it doesn’t matter as long as the work is delivered to expected standards.

As Long as they are fufilling what they are hired to do, that is what I employeed them to do.
now if in there contract they are required to come to office then yea thats an issue but more so a conversation that needs to be had because again if he/she can produce at the level I expect, am i really concerned as to where?

Do you work remotely or at the office? Would you quit your job if you had to go to the office full time? I’d quit immediately. Well as soon as I found another job 😂. Currently, I’m working from home I go to the office once in a while. I can work from any country. I went to the beach for 3 weeks and just took two days off to recover from a festival.
