If you could go back and tell yourself one thing as you begin your career in sales, what would it be?

I didn't really learn this until I made my first couple of job switches. Now I straight up tell recruiters my minimum OTE to even have a conversation.

I'd especially emphasize the fail fast part. Tough to swallow when you're trying to make it, but much better than losing slowly and painfully.

1) You aren't gonna get fired from the entry role so stop stressing
2) You are eventually going to get fired somewhere. Turns it out it doesn't matter that much
3) If someplace is shitty, don't bother trying to stick it out
4) Trust fewer internal people
5) Location matters more than you think
6) Don't take a job just for a sales manager. Chances are he or she won't be the person very long anyway.

You can book a meeting with anyone - prospects are all just people at heart and there's no need to get intimidated. The CEO of Walmart is a human just like a manager of a gas station is.

I disagree the Waltons are not human, they're born from the cesspool of Gluttony and Pride. Satan look upon them and smiled saying his work was complete.

Don't let them bully you about low activity, you are a good relationship developer and if they fire you before you meet quota go to their competitor and MAKE. THEM.  PAY.

The manager's stories are 90% bullshit and the other 10% are the same story told in different ways.

Don't trust HR they aren't looking out for you, they're looking out for the company and covering their own asses.

Expected OTE is a joke.

Accounting/Finance will often look for ways around paying your full commission if you do better than expected.

damn. sounds like you sold for a toxic org. Never understood why a company would try to NOT pay commissions. The fastest way to demotivate your sellers, and in turn dry up your revenue engine.

Succeeding early in your sales career creates compounding returns:

1. you build a great reputation amongst peers
2. you build a great reputation amongst managers, who continue to hire and serve as your reference
3. you make more money by hitting goals
4. you get promoted faster (show career growth)
5 ...which also increases your comp faster

Basically, it's worth it to hyperfocus early in your career on mastering your craft, outworking your peers, and sacrificing a few extra hours grinding.

This is unpopular advice because it feeds into hustle culture (which I hate) - but it's still the advice I'd give myself.
