If you can truly afford it and the rest of your appearance matches, sure. But if you scrimp and save to buy a Rolex and pair it with mall brand jeans and a cheap haircut please slow ur roll.

Patek / Piguet > Rolex imo

Agreed- gotta have the look to go with it for sure. I used to be really into watches and wanted a Patek/ Rolex as well, but I got an Apple Watch and it’s just so practical. Maybe in the future I’ll get a Rollie?

I was advised many years ago that if you're in that caliber of "watches", they are called "timepieces".

I have a watch.  :)

I am not a watch or timepiece type of person but I will say that I look at higher end watches or cars as investments that could give you some returns on the investment if you wanted to sell them.

Most Rolexes don't fall into this category, for what it's worth. Although I do like the look of the Explorer.

Yea, I don’t really know much at all about watches and wasn’t sure if they would give any type of a return on the investment of one.

Nothing wrong with having a special watch for special occasions given your finances are in order otherwise. If you wear one everyday I assume you’re a douche or it’s fake.

Or you bought a watch that can be worn every day. I don't have one, but there are some folks that wear them every day to the office given they wear a suit and/or work in an environment where appearances are a premium.

No judgement here. Wear what YOU like. Fuck erry1 else. My favorite is actually a men's rose gold with a cobalt blue face. Plain, but striking. I get compliments on it daily.  Brand? Michael Kors. Who cares?

My 64-year-old father rocks a "Nolex" he got for free at a golf tournament.  The same acceptable price tag for a Rolex in my opinion.

As a female when I see a Rolex or a ridiculous car I think someone's overcompensating for something...ahem

Have one.  It sits in my watch winding box and I wear my iWatch 100% of the time.  If I could get the $7000 back, I would.  If you have too much money, stick it in a Roth IRA or send it to me.  I can give you my address.

Blow it up
I honestly can't stand the peacock culture and would rather save that cash and invest instead of blowing it on dumb shit to impress strangers. Sometimes I feel that a salesperson can be too overdressed and have clients asking what they're really paying for.

I wear mall brands and drive a Hyundai. My watch is a $100 smartwatch with a battery that lasts 2 weeks.

I assume since you’re in sales your talking an entry level oyster.
Those are dope, but once you can afford more then one (and you sell your oyster), checkout the Vacheron Constantin leather patrimony models. They run about $20k I believe and the blue face with dark leather make me bite my lip so hard it bleeds.
Love you bae, go get that money.

wacking 20k off a mortgage would sooo much more satisfying in the long run compared to the relative "street cred" of an expensive time teller.

but if you got no debt then maybe but i wouldnt buy to flaunt, id invest to sell.

Why would I be in a hurry to pay off cheap debt when my capital can appreciate at a higher rate than my mortgage interest? Sounds like you don’t have a clue about personal finance

Bro can you read…. The question is ABOUT A WATCH.. my answer is what I would do before a watch. For ME if it’s between being a fake baller living in a bank owned pad, or paying down my pad- I am paying down my house.
I understand investments and how they work. This question was about a watch.
Great job reading

My point is that with debt so cheap, I wouldn’t use how much you have left on your mortgage as a means of qualifying whether or not you’re okay to spend $20k on a watch.  I could have $600k left on my home and still have a net worth of $500k.  I also refuse to converse with anyone regarding financial matters that refers to their house as a “pad”.  As you were,

Buying a 20k watch is laughable when you only have a net worth of a measly $500k. That’s 4% of your wealth on your wrist for a few hrs a week to try to ‘impress’ other people.
That’s poor man status. Let’s be real. Fake balling. We all know these people. Most are up to their ears in debt, making ccard payments living check to check. To look fancy. I know quite a few. FAKE people.
He should be wearing a Casio watch if he has only a 500k net worth.. That’s chump change..
Sounds like you’re living that fake it till you make it ‘baller on a budget’ lifestyle and trying to defend it.
To each their own. I’ll retire early with my cheap Iwatch that tells time perfect and not living paycheck to paycheck to show off for people who really just don’t give a shit.
Sorry, in CA the house is a ‘pad’ once it’s over a few million. Maybe you’ll get there some day pal.
Toodles.

If you want it, get it. Just wear it appropriately that’s all that matters. Meaning if you’re in gym shorts and t-shirt don’t wear a bracelet timepiece. I have the Omega seamaster, and love it.

I have little to no interest in a timepiece like this. I’d much rather put the money towards experiences and fun. Even art around the house returns more happiness to me. Just my two cents.

As an enthusiast; nothing wrong with a Rolex. Of course I agree with having your finances in order etc.
Don’t buy it as an investment, and there are of course better pieces (Patek, VC, AP), but the main issue these days is finding one at MSRP. Good luck!

It's just a different asset class that's fairly liquid these days like a collectable car or art.  If you have to wear a watch why not wear one that appreciates and if something happens your insurance pays you out at the appraised value.

A watch of that caliber is more about being a piece of jewelry than merely keeping time.   For that reason, whatever you pay that much money for better very strongly appeal to your personal sense of aesthetic beauty.

I bought a nice Tag Heuer watch a long time ago.  It sits in a box and I wear my apple watch every day.  It's not a Rolex but at the time it was a status thing for me.  Looking back... it wasn't a wise purchase.

Anyone interested in a used Tag?
