Whats with the praise for the company that just laid you off?

Every day I seem to see another company that just had to do layoffs. I just saw ANOTHER post from Hopin who did the classic overhire then fire everybody move and the person was just praising how great of a company they are and how LUCKY they are to have gotten to work there (less than a year).

Are they bribing people with better severance packages if they praise them? I really dont get it. I've been laid off once- my very first job. I didn't exactly resent them for it, company got bought and thats just business. But I cant imagine ever praising a company that just fired me because they grew irresponsibly. That'd be like getting divorced from a cheating A-hole and making a social media post about how fortunate you were to get to be married to them in the first place. Rant over.

I believe I got set up with them for an interview through Bravado back in the day. Didn't work out, thankfully. Dodged a bullet there, but also goes to show that Bravado isn't as selective of who they recruit for as they claim.

Its hard for me to put too much blame on Bravado. Im sure they told them the same thing they told every employee they hired in the last year.

Oh yeah, but when you portray yourself as the arbiter of great companies to work with, you can't afford to funnel folks into companies that'll just lay them off less than a year later because they overhired of all things.

DEFINITELY a bribe/severance agreement piece.

It seems so disingenuous it hurts.

Toxic positivity has been a common denominator of my last couple startups. They must think it's the only way not to burn bridges or they have been conditioned to do it.

I understand setting unrealistic expectations is not productive, but in my experience, โ€œtoxic positivityโ€ is a term negative people often throw out there to try to put down people that are truly happy.

That's a great phrase, 'toxic positivity', and I'm stealing it. I worked at one like that... then nobody made quota for 3 straight quarters and we all bailed because motivational speeches don't pay my commission

I doubt it's a bribe or part of any package honestly. It's cringe to see on the surface - but it's also an awesome way to get your profile out there and noticed by companies that are hiring.

Put yourself in a recruiter's shoes - if all of a sudden there were 100+ new leads for you to go after on LinkedIn and all you had to do was search "Hopin" or whatever hashtag they all use to find them posting this - you'd hit them up to fill your pipeline of potential talent. PLUS everyone is going to comment for their network to see. "You were AMAZING to work with AND the HARDEST worker EVER!" etc etc etc

playing a bit of devils advocate here because i closed a deal this morning that was a hail mary for july and cracked open a bottle of wine a bit early.

Congrats on the deal! I get what you're saying. It still feels like rewarding bad behavior of companies to me, but I get what you mean. Ill never do it.

Maybe to help make it look like they are easy to work with to hiring managers? Other than that you got me. ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

โ€œCommenting for reachโ€ on these types of LinkedIn posts also has just become a way to make it look like you are helping with doing literally nothing too. I guess itโ€™s nice and more then Iโ€™m doing.

Itโ€™s just to look modest. I personally think itโ€™s whack to do something like that but I get why people do it. Because they are pussies

I'd have a very hard time personally being overly complimentary of an employer who overhired and then decided I was redundant, so I also do not get it. I wouldn't be gushing about it on LinkedIn. It's probably an age thing. I noticed my peers who were let go a couple of months ago were regretful it had come to an end, but more interested in looking forward, and helping each other find places to land.

Coming from someone who works closely with the Demand Gen - Marketing teams. Typically, recruiters monitor several channels for layoffs to build their rosters. LI is one of the main drivers. The person laid off tags the company in their post and that basically sends a flare to every recruiter/HR person. At least that's how it was explained to me.

I feel like it's a way to make yourself more palatable to other companies that would potentially hire you in the future. I've been told no for a position before because I "talked too negatively" about my previous employer (who laid me off).

Companies, especially startups, want sycophants on their team. Praising a company that laid you off is the #1 way to broadcast that you will do the same when you're inevitably laid off by the next failed startup.

I get these type of posts when YOU leave the company to have a gracious exit but yeah if I get punted in massive layoffs I'm not going to make a post like that.

I think they're asked to do this by their former employee in exchange of some perks.

Like "keep that macbook you've been using for 3 years a souvenir if you post lovely shit about us when we fire you."

If people really enjoyed their time there. I feel like why not leave on a high note, plus all the leadership at the company will see and would want to hire you back. Plus leadership can actually try to help you land your next one vs just hoping you land on your feet.

Its similar to being asked why you are leaving your role in an interview, you shouldn't try to be too negative
