Has anyone tried Whatsapp in people instead of cold calling them? In consumer spaces I see that open rates are much higher and also more convenient than just cold calling someone IMO.

Yes in certain territories e.g India/part's of Asia it's fine to do this. Banks and telecom companies reach out to you almost daily actually..
I've only ever got spam from unsolicited people on whatsapp. Sometimes it is a bit scary!
But, IMO i'm not too sure, when I have gave my number out for things for genuine interest I don't mind if they ring me once or twice. But have found sometimes they ping you on Whatsapp constantly or keep ringing you loads on it. Of course, easy to block. I just think when they see you online they act on it. Of course, again, you can hide that. But I dont want to change my stuff cos of them.

I speak to a lot of resellers from taiwan, vietnam and singapore on whatsapp but i have good personal relations with them now. Wouldn't recommend it for cold prospecting - i'd hate being prospected to on whatsapp
