When changing companies, I was told I had to climb up the ladder in order to prove myself

A career changer, was trying to move into SaaS coming from a different background, spent some time in a service business sourcing and closing contracts. When talking to a VP of Sales at a venture-backed SaaS company I was trying to get my foot in the door, I was told I had to climb the ladder starting as an SDR again. At that time, I was already in a closing role.

Why would I be told that?

Does that still hold true?

I ended up finding a different company.

Depending on the company, there is a lot of turnover in SDR/BDR roles and oftentimes theyโ€™re trying to fill those seats, then promote people who excel in that role

I agree with Fox - depending on the company you'd rather prove concept in order to achieve better and more sustainable results for the long term.ย

What milestones and skills will I need to become a top enterprise AE?

If you join a SaaS company and thrive at the beginning due to inbound leads and good SDR and then sales start going down due to a change of SDR and less inbounds, does that mean youโ€™re not a competent sales person or does it mean itโ€™s time to move on to another company?
