When did you "make it" in your sales career?

Hey everyone,

1st post here and did some searching and couldn't really find anything in depth on this. When in your sales career did you feel like you "made it"?

Where you felt like the company that you are/were working for, was the one you wanted to spend as much time as possible at and believed in everything the company said and did?

I would say that I am still a rookie in what CorpBro would call, 'The Biz", with less than 5 years of sales experience, and just feel like I haven't found the right company to work at.

Thoughts?

Speaking from a SaaS/Software perspective, which it looks like you're in:ย

Things move at the speed of light so I wouldn't ascribe your personal "making it" to the particular company you're working for. Obviously, working for a company you believe in, especially the products, is important. But I would qualify your making it within the context of your own personal achievements. Whether that's being promoted into a more senior role, into management, really getting refined with your sales motion to where it's clockwork, etc.ย

Personally, when I transitioned into a Sr. AE role, began working significant, needle-mover deals, hit a high OTE tier, and was respected by my peers and leadership as a valued contributor, that's when I felt like "I've made it".

Don't rely on "the company" to qualify your making it. Rely on you personal and professional growth, status and (not to be blunt) your take home.ย

For me it was given a pres club trip as a thank you for all My hard work though I wasn't in a closing role, was leading a biz dev team. I knew then the company cared and biz dev for once was appreciated. I promptly quit after the trip though and went back to closing role. Lol

Earlier this year. Just broke into an Account Management role with a larger compensation package and much better work life balance.ย

I don't plan on leaving my current company anytime soon as I think if you have a good relationship with your boss/colleagues, are paid fairly, and believe in the product you sell, that's a winning combination that I think we're all after.ย

So maybe instead of asking yourself if you made it or not, maybe ask if you can see yourself making it at your current company. Do you want to "make it" here or "make it" somewhere else?ย

Hope this helps!

As I sit and think about this longer, hereโ€™s one more thought.ย

โ€œIโ€™ve made itโ€ implies one has gotten to where they want to be and are now โ€œdoneโ€. Iโ€™m sure itโ€™s not the authors intent, but itโ€™s a good reminder for myself and all of us to never feel like once we have โ€œmade itโ€ that we are done.ย

Constantly reevaluating and re-upping my career growth and personal accomplishment is what keeps me sharp, humble (said humbly) and flexible.ย

Hit those big goals. Take a min to bask in that success; acknowledge and revel in it. Celebrate it. But donโ€™t stop or get comfortable/complacent. Find another echelon to โ€œmakeโ€ and get back to work.ย

I hope to have many more โ€œIโ€™ve made itโ€ moments in my life, both personally and professionally.ย

Love the company I'm with, love what I do and what I sell, but still don't feel like I've "arrived".ย  And I'm ok with that, I like to remain hungry.

When I found a company that listens to what I say & my input actually means something, even as an AE.
