When is THIS ok?

It's clear that your boy is having some issues lately (me)..

to sum up: Sales department is in stagnant growth mode. new VP has produced zero results, in fact, has taken us multiple steps back (no clear direction, bad bad bad strategy, terrible rollout of new strategy..couldn't even make a comp plan that made sense...). CEO has stepped in to save the day!!!! whole department now realigned.

This cost me a well deserved promotion..

Ever ok to document your bosses failures, and your successes, and go over their head?

Is it ever permissible to go over your bosses head if they stink at their job?

Document EVERYTHING like your job (or promotion) depends upon it... Because it does.ย

Boss talks about a "growth plan" but didnt put it in writing, document it.ย

Manager tells you you're going to get a raise or bump in commission but didn't put it in writing, document it.ย

New CSM says she's (or he) gonna give you an over-the-pants HJ after work but doesn't put it in writing, document it.ย

You get the point.ย

You should document every call you have with your managerโ€”start an on-going note document of your 1:1s and invite them to contribute to it. Got a Gong, Chorus or simile tool? Record the calls for better note taking and recall.

Use this information as your audit log of efforts made and the truth in what your conversations are. Not a weapon, but a defensive tool to lean on.

Saving this post, this is gold. Namely the weapon vs. defense route. So many people get this wrong, itโ€™s been a game changer for how I manage up though.

It depends on your relationships with the VP and the CEO.ย  It doesn't sound like you have a strong 1-1 relationship with either.ย  Odds are the VP could be on his way out, but he could take out a few people before that happens.ย ย

If you have an ok or better relationship with the CEO - &/or he has an open door policy - go to him and ask about opportunities to move up.ย  He *should* appreciate your ambition and I doubt it will cost you anything.

It sounds like your new VP has almost no checks and balances within the company (the CEO had to take action). You absolutely need to document what is happening.ย @RealPatrickBatemanย has this point nailed down.
I would be looking around if someone like this was leading my team after getting their "strategy" shut down.

I documented everything once and basically was told to โ€˜go wipe my ass with the paperโ€™ / told to โ€˜take it and send it to somebody who caresโ€™.

In my situation it was a waste of time and energy. Nepotism wins every time.
I say you put on knee pads and go to work on the CEO and upper management. Or just bounce.
Itโ€™s not worth stressing over it.

i would agree with you for the most part.ย

BUT

If you are a director level, I would HOPE that the documentation strategy coupled with laying out what changes you would have made and how successful you were when you did it your way. would work.ย

but if it doesnt FOR SURE bounce.ย

the next company will most likely love you for your efforts.ย

yeah you should take note of everything that happens for either your exit interview, leverage you're innocent, or tough conversations with your immediate boss or bosses boss.

Letโ€™s be real. The exit interview file goes straight to the rubbish bin. Management doesnโ€™t give one single fuck about those.
