When looking at a new job: does wfh/office matter?

So I'm at the 3rd round of interviews with a SaaS company which I hope is great (product, RepVue ranking, reputation etc..). Still need to iron out exact fit (on both side) and role as they have many open as they are growing.

What surprised me in mid 2021 is that they expect people to be in the office a minimum of 3 days a week. When you are new even 4 or 5. As it's a "young" company I found this suprirsing.

I get that office life is great for sharing and learning quickly. I get that as a new starter you want to soak up as much information quickly - I actually suggested this myself. I get that they just opened a new office. But it seems strange to me to be so prescriptive at this point in time.

I'm also surprised by my perplexed reaction. Currently we can work from home whenever and I know a lot of SaaS vendors that do the same.

Is WFH/Office becoming an important decision factor on the job market? What are you seeing and how do you look at this factor when considering a move.

after 1.5 years of full WFH I think spending 2 hours a day commuting can no longer be seen as "the cost of doing business/getting a great job/the hustle" but more of a waste of time in my life.

Have I turned into a little b*tch? or are they a bit old school and inflexible? I think I'll definitely need a significant raise from them to cover the "cost of commuting" and reduced flexiblity.

fair or nah?

I don't want to go to the office any more than I have to and I think that opening up your hiring pool to remote workers increases the likelihood of companies attracting better talent so WFH definitely seems like a trend that's here to stay for some companies. ย Others probably saw a drop off in production and feel that they need their employees closer to the office to be productive.

Both can be correct. ย If you don't like the office policy move on. ย Chances are they aren't going to become more flexible after you accept the position. ย I'd imagine they are more strict than they lead you to believe.

I don't think you can call companies that adapted to combat a global pandemic "old school" when they choose to revert back to normal when the risks are lowered. ย

You sound a little like a bitch.

thanks for sharing your perspective. all fair points.

I am feeling that "normal" has shifted a lot, at least in tech though

It's only important if it's important to YOU. Everyone will have a different opinion.

Personally, I believe companies that force their employees to go back on site instead of having an option to WFH are stuck in their ways. I don't want to work for someone that isn't flexible or willing to roll with the fast changing times.

I really don't like making the commute, but being in the office for me has been a lot better than I thought it would. It's nice being around a bunch of people all day, and any easy questions I have are answered much quicker. I also have been more productive in office. I know not everyone is like that, but I feel like its easier to be on top of things in office.

Call me what you want, just sign the damn contract
This strikes me as a company that is one of those culty start-ups that wants to exert a lot of control over its people.

You're justified in how you're feeling, I feel that commuting every day is a waste of time too. WFH flexibility is increasingly important and top orgs will start to offer this as standard.

I'd explain your perspective to them honestly and explain why the 1-2 days per week you'd be in the office would be sufficient in your caseย ย i.e. I'm going to book all my 121s and internal calls on those days and then use the remaining days at home to knuckle down and focus on selling/prospecting/meetings etc.

Yeah I think we can all agree a mix of WFH and the office is practically the new norm. Most people already reaped the benefits of working from home.ย

More work and life balance makes happier numbers.
Happier numbers makes greater revenue.

I say yes, WFH option is def needed now.

Absolutely.

And flexibility on when you can go in is key.ย

I would say this is a completely fair feeling for you to have. I don't think going into the office 5 days a week versus being able to work from home 5 days a week makes a difference in terms of how someone performs.

WFH will be an important factor for me personally moving forward, at least doing WFH a couple of days week at a bare minimum.ย

I think it's ridiculous for any company to require employees to be in person at the office given the way the workplace has changed.ย  Commuting is absolutely a waste of time and reduces your overall mental energy to accomplish tasks.ย

I personally love the mix of working from home and going into the office. I think that if I were to take a new job I would need to be able to work remotely at least 2 days a week. I enjoy going into the office to be social and meet colleagues but love not having the commute.ย

I think if they are saying 3 days a week, you already have flexibility so I am sure you can tell them you want to work one or two or just one or none. Of course, it's always a plus to go in and socialise but if you are more productive at home then let them know.ย

I plan on working in sales long enough to save up a nest egg to invest either in real estate or in my own business and get out of the game completely.
