When looking for a company - Capped Commissions vs. Uncapped Commissions

I have heard this argument before from

hiring managers & recruiters that when you are looking for a company look at uncapped vs capped commissions.

Capped commissions - example 300%. basically means that the goals are obtainable or enough people are exceeding quota to create a Cap.

The companies with uncapped earnings potential of course means you could make a lot more $, but generally these companies goals are either unobtainable or a vast majority of reps do not hit sales quota.

what do you look for in a company?

There is zero reason for a capped commission plan. We are paid on what we bring in so being penalized for exceeding all expectations is foolish.

I would rather have no commission plan and be 100% salary than be capped with a variable.

I’m 100% with you. The salary would have to be high!

It boggles my mind that companies can survive with “capped” commissions.

That’s also probably like “Sandbag” central.

This is it. Makes a lot of sense.

I don't think I've ever even come across a company with capped commissions before, actually.

At&t business - mid market & above had caps of 300%. You would rollover anything higher than 300%. There are more out there but generally startups or smaller companies.

Uncapped makes sense as it's adding to the revenue stream and as we put out blood and sweat we expect to get a small pie
