When to Start Prospecting Previous Clients

I recently made the move from one organization to another. Over my tenure at the first organization I had built several very good relationships with customers and prospects I had convinced to become customers. Now, I have the opportunity to start calling all of those contacts and steal business from my previous employee.

I have been at my new organization for just under a month and am getting the itch to start calling my old contacts immediately. Initially I had planned on giving myself 60 days to ramp up and get my footing under me but I am getting the feeling striking while the iron is hot will be more effective.

You more than likely have a non-solicitation agreement in place for at least a few months...going after your old company's business right away is playing with fire. Also, calling your old clients as soon as you switch employers can come off as disingenuous and they're likely going to question why you sold them into your last product if the competition is so much better. You could end up burning bridges this way.

Think on it for a few months - at least get past your probationary period so you can learn about your company's offerings and processes. When you do call old clients only call the ones where you can actually offer them better value and be prepared to tell them why you think a switch is in their best interests.

That's rare! Well, then I'd still give it a few months so you can learn all you can and be as sharp as possible when you do give them a call. It could happen where you don't end up wanting to stay at your new company after another month or two and want to save your old contacts for the new role you end up taking.

Fair game is fair game. Get after them if theyโ€™re ripe for the picking.ย
