When you know, you know (job hunting)

For the past 2 years I have been with the same company and for the most part it's been great. I've made a bunch of money and there's been so many learnings I have had from working at my current job.

For the past 9-12 months our product team has struggled to deliver for the organization and our Marketing team is in complete disarray mostly due to a lack of leadership. The sales team has been trudging along and more recently we have really felt the affects of the 2 problems mentioned. As much as I like my current company I don't see us being able to course correct for at least 1 year on the product or marketing front and your boy justatitle has got shit to pay for. Additionally the pressure on sales has been amped up meaning more scrutiny and micromanagement.

Fast forward to today and as annoying as interviewing is now I am sitting on an offer and 2 more companies in final stages with me all of which would be an increase in my OTE of 50-60K. The lesson here to me is that you can absolutely not be afraid to break out of your comfort zone and as stressful as sales can be there's companies that need good salespeople all the time.

I hope this is helpful to the community. Peace, Love, S.A.D.N.E.S.S.

When youโ€™re comfy you sit still and fall asleep. Put a rock in your back pocket and youโ€™ll never stop moving.ย

Key takeaway: Donโ€™t get comfy.

Funny enough, I took a "promotion" that cost me 15-20K this year...ย

Also took a promotion this year thatโ€™s costing me $$$. Did it for the long term potential at my current company and exit opportunities to new companies. Best of luck!

Short term vs long term. Have to consider both.

Congratulations! Glad it is working out for you. Question: when you took the promotion, did you know it would probably cost you? And did you take that promotion with an eye to your ability to leverage the role in the future?

Thanks, to answer the question, yes I knew it would cost me and it was sold to me as growth so it was to leverage in the future.

In all 3 cases I was reached out to for the roles. Wouldnโ€™t say super active but I had become open to new roles whereas in the past I was not.

I am not actually which is why I was perplexed about being contacted so much. Then I quickly realized they didn't read my profile. So aggravating.ย

Ah, very annoying but it's nice to be wanted and in a way, it's what we do trying to sell our products to people when we outbound to our prospects. The difference is we're the product. There's also a shortage of sales people right now with all the VC money that was raised during the pandemic and companies are overpaying to get good talent.ย

Nothing wrong with making a move to better yourself.ย  I think too many people hop from job to job always chasing another bump in salary but that doesn't sound like what @Justatitleย is doing here.ย  It's always easier to get a job when you have a job so if you see that your current situation isn't going to improve any time soon then GTFO.ย  Sales is hard enough when you have a GREAT product and a SOLID team.ย  If you are constantly taking ass chewings from your customers because your ops team is incompetent or your product is shitty then it's time to go.

Yes, I agree with this statement and ultimately I became open to other roles due to some internal factors out of my control. I also found out my boss is looking around for a new role and that was the nail in the proverbial coffin. Appreciate the feedback!

Wow, I had the exactโ€ฆand I mean exact same story but over 3.5 years instead of 2. I worked my way up to a management role at my company and then increased my OTE but $100k by moving to a Silicon Valley Series C in February.

You are right. Itยดs always the "Product fails to deliver" that gets my spider sensors up nowdays. Everytime I hear that I know itยดs a bout to hit the fan.
