Where are my car sales folks at??? Help me not get F@#%&@!

Ok so I am in the market for a pre owned minivan. #dadlife

I know pretty much what i want and Im hoping to pay cash.

But my hope is if the car is 5-7K above what I have to see if they will bring it down if I pay all cash.

Do I go in and say this is how much cash I have what can you get me?

Or tell them I have a few grand for a down payment, get to the end and then ask for a price reduction to pay all cash?

Any other tips to get a good deal???

Not in car sales but with the market for used vehicles being so crazy right now buying new might make more sense. Factor in warranty and lead times into your considerations, everyone's situation is different.

Another route I've seen savvy people do is hit up auctions at auto wreckers, befriend a good mechanic, and put a written-off car (usually a pickup truck) back on the road.

When I bought my new car in 2018 I used unhaggle to find the invoice price. I walked into the dealer and told them I'm in sales, I know the invoice cost and had a price I wanted to pay. They blinked first and gave me an offer that was lower and included more options than what I already had decided on.

I'm living that dad life and am looking at getting a bigger vehicle in the next year or two. I'm waiting to see what happens on the electric front and for the early kinks worked out of some of the new models.

hmm ya you are not the first person to mention the auction idea.
Ill have to chat with my mechanic about that.

Ill check out unhaggle too thats a good tip.

Best of luck. Be wary of too good to be true offers as not many are giving up good quality used cars these days.

We needed another car to cover our teen driver.    A dealer from which I've purchased two new cars sent an email alerting me to used cars, I clicked on it, and actually found something very suitable.   It wasn't terribly overpriced, and we ended up buying it.  They weren't budging on cash only giving a better deal, but after a quick bit of looking around online and a convo with a mechanic friend on the side, we confirmed that it was a good deal, and had the car in the driveway that day.    I'd scan all the local sites for what you're looking for to see what's out there and what's being asked in the market as well.

Have you thought about lease busting? Definitely not cash, but might work out for you given the state of the used car market.

Basically, though it can sometimes just be a takeover.

Depends on the person. Sometimes they want you to pony up to transfer, sometimes they don't.

I sold VAG products during the diesel scandal. Never buy anything connected to the VW badge.

Buy a Toyota Sienna or Honda Odyssey. If you’re open to an SUV, Lexus.

Not in the car sales game but from my experience with trading in my car this last November the margins seemed pretty thin with dealerships right now on used cars.

Trade in value they gave me was 19k (Bought it brand new in 2017 for 22k) and then they turned around and resold it for 22.9k.  So dealership/salesperson may not have as much wiggle room as in years past with used vehicles.  Much of what the finance/sales team does make money on is extended warranties, service features, etc. so you could just go barebone and not worry about that stuff.

Should try and look at private sale if possible, you would have much more wiggle room and cash is king and someone won't always turn down a cash offer that is 5-7k below what they are asking.

With the current insanity in car sales you are better off buying new and spending what is likely to be the same amount of money also dealerships prefer you financing the car because they make more off of that and ultimately you can pay it off sooner with aggressive payments, especially if you have a chunk of change. Honda Odyssey, Chrysler are all very solid options

Margins aren’t thin, really. It just depends on the vehicle. The writing is on the wall here for dealers, I saw some first discounts today… we took all markup off of Audi.

Realistically, remember that you will have to ask first, and maybe you find a nice sales manager. Everything is a car deal until it isn’t. Don’t waste time, just ask. Let them know where you’re at honestly and maybe you find a gem of a deal.

With the type of discount you’re looking for, expect to get told “no” many times — you’ll find a dealer who has had a vehicle in inventory long enough to take a hit on a deal to move a unit.

thanks for the insight. Do you make more if the person puts more money down on the car? Or if they pay full cash? or does that not matter?

At my dealer? Doesn’t matter. Some dealers get some good money off of reserve (basically a certain percentage of financed amount) in back end gross. Do you happen to be in Oregon? I’d be happy to help you out.

Car dealerships actually make a ton more money on financing, and especially with the market right now, I doubt cash offer would do that much.

I'd hit up like 20 local dealerships and just get offers via email from everyone, and then haggle with like 3 for the best deal.

I mean you can still try and haggle with cash as king, but its not like the good old days where a place will drop their pants to take the offer. But yeah just email everyone from home, and you can literally get a deal and not have to go to the dealership. Hell, they can even drive you out the car and have you sign the paperwork when they drop it off.

Do you folks "hate" it when you get referred to as sales person/sales guy?
