Where are my Okta people?

A friend referred me and a recruiter is reaching out. What is the word on the street about working there?

@StickToTheProcess  Yo what’s up - spent 5 years there and recently left. The MM team is sick, you can make a ton of money. There are some really good managers and some REALLY shitty ones, just depends. I have multiple friends who went SDR up through the ranks to Ent/Strat now.

Okta just had a big leadership change last year as a shit ton of people left after the 4 year vest post-IPO ended.

The product is really easy to sell, and they are by far the market leader in the core products. The newer editions are a little more of a stretch though, but still solid adds to the portfolio.

I wouldn’t be surprised if I boomerang one day.

Appreciate the insight. Do the great managers outnumber the awful ones, or are chances higher that direct management will suck?

Yup. There’s only a few bad apples. My long term career mentors are all current/former “Oktanauts”.

So - I haven’t interviewed there in a long time, my last internal interview was on 2017 and the rest of the promos were based on Merit and networking.

BUT - I know generally how they go. Typically for external hires it’s 1-2 meet & greet behavioral interviews, 1-2 manager/RVP level interviews, and then a panel which can be either a mock preso or a pitch. They used to give you a prompt but I’m not sure how the pitch gets run anymore, they might let you pitch your own company instead of Okta now.

Okta is a pretty unique product in that it’s very easy to calculate ROI. The big areas are productivity, B2C customer sat, and security. Really highlight those (depending on interview use case) and you will be fine!

The typical buyers (if you get asked) are either the CIOs org or the CISOs org. Occasionally we sold to devs externally for B2C use cases like getting imbedded in a platform.

Good luck!!

It sounds like you had a great experience there. Could you share a little about why you left?

I’ve got a buddy over there and he seems pretty happy with the pay. The product is pretty decent as well. Just to be clear though, this guy is hands down the best sales rep I have ever meet. He could kill it anywhere. Watching him sell is like watching michelangelo paint the sistine chapel.
On the other hand, I’ve heard about some serious bro culture in their sales org. No idea if it’s true or not, but I’ve heard that rumor.
