You’re too damn awesome. My AE is kick ass too - I think it all just comes down to building the relationship as fast as possible and knowing what drives each other. We have a good system in place - I update him probably too much on upcoming potentials and giving him some solid runway of how the chat went and where to steer the disco.

Also, I’m probably not the “average” SDR/BDR. I’m 30, come from a full cycle role previously, and have a lot of life experience than most. *Thanks Uncle Sam*

I was a BDR in a former role and most this is their first job out of college and it can be strenuous, AES should be willing to offer to help them in their career and offer feedback where helpful. Keep killing it brother

Is it a pretty common experience in SaaS to have shitty SDR<>AE relationships?
Justatitle
Big Shot

Account Executive
Not common but there’s entitled AEs and there’s always the SDR trying to constantly push unqualified opps to hit their number
Stratifyz

You raise a valid question..

When you say unqualified, are you referring to the fact that they booked a meeting with a wrong persona / wrong company?
Justatitle
Big Shot

Account Executive
Not the wrong persona or wrong company, rather a terrible use case, or they won’t have the budget in a million years and they’re just wasting time
Stratifyz

So you have your SDRs running qualification to a certain degree it sounds like. I guess it’s a little different for me because I just have to capture the attention and book the meeting. My AE will typically then do a 15-20 minute intro/disco call and determine if it pushes further.
Justatitle

They will barely scratch the surface intentionally so and it rarely is unqualified but if it is unqualified it’s always the usual suspects
Stratifyz

Gotcha! I’ve heard mixed things about some teams letting SDRs run qualification but I’m glad that’s not the case here. However, if it was the case, I’d be curious to know how that works because I feel like doing any kind of qualification on a first cold call would be straight up brutal and almost impossible.

BDR/SDRs need to be acknowledged more. Its a grind. I started as a BDR after a career change, similar to you, at 29. I'm constantly pumping up the BDRs on our team.

It is definitely a grind but I think I’m one of those twisted people who don’t mind it. If I could make AE pay and just drive meetings, sheeeeeeeet.

How do you like to pump up the team? I have no interest in management for AT LEAST 3-5 years but coming from a different background than most I can’t stand the typical “lip service”.

Like, oh you guys are doing great. Awesome - appreciate it… I felt all of that deeply 😂

I am AE right now, looking to go management in the next year.

I just talk to them honestly. Let them know I was in their shoes, I know what the grind is like, and that their work is driving everyone pipelines. Honesty goes a long way. I'm not ra ra cheerleader lol but if I see a BDR crush several meetings booked in a week or multiple in a day, I'll reach out on slack and shout them out. I also just try to occasionally ask how their day is going, if its a shit day, lets talk about it.

If you haven’t checked it out, I recommend looking into ‘Sales Management. Simplified.’ by the legend Mike Weinberg.

Curious, what makes you want to get into management?

Good mentality to have. I think if you can realize that your team is a direct reflection of your leadership - you’ll be just fine. At it’s core, your team is only as strong as the weakest link 😁

That’s a good question!

I *think* I want to go the AE route but at the same time, I’m like do I really want the additional stress and politics.

If I could make ~80K base as like an Enterprise SDR I would possibly consider it.

I’m trying to retire by 50 so I need to make as much money as possible in the next 20 years. But, also keep my marriage and kids happy 😂

There’s a fine line though.

I have a close friend who was an AE making $350K - he’s no longer an AE to say the least.

Maybe there was something going on personally or internally but he made it clear that it wasn’t worth it.

100%. I'm not just a number. Very open to change as well if it means more production. As long as I get my work done and bring in business, I can do honestly whatever works, work whatever hours I want. Its also cool help an org develop and feel like you played a big part in it.

I have much love for my SDRs savages, you guys go through so much sh*t its unbelievable. I always do my best to support and help my SDRs.

At the same time, I do get a lot of crap meeting from my SDR with totally irrelevant "prospects", and deal with a ton of pushiness from the SDR to make it an SQL, so they can meet their numbers. However, 99% of the time this is not really the fault of the SDR (with a few exceptions) but because of crazy targets set by management followed by absurd pressure from same.
