Which business should I start?

thank you @SaaSsy for the post idea!

I'm trying to decide which move to make in 2023. My overall goal is happiness, more money, and travel.

My experience, and contact list, would be in starting my own lighting rep agency. I would likely try to start it in a smaller market, since it’s easier to convince manufacturers to move to someone new and I make contact with all the big players since I’m in a big market. I will probably offer my current company owners ownership so I can A) get their blessing to basically have 2 jobs B) get some more years of experience behind the venture

Another possible is an interior design firm. I defintely have an eye for design and fit in much more with designers than salespeople (although I can fit in any crowd) it will just take some time to make a name and build a client base, it's more subjective so it would take longer to find the correct clientele.

Or I could do lighting fixture design firm/manufacturer. I already have multiple designs drawn up and have shown some people in the industry and they are defintely interested, even in a partnership to manufacturer. I likely wouldn't do the actual manufacturing and just outsource it to an manufacturer in the states or Canada that has good quality.

Option 1 is basically free to start and very quickly should make money, if acquiring the correct manufacturers I could easily cover any overhead effectively immediately.
Option 2 will take longer to get clients and make money but it’s more what I want to do.
Option 3 will require more money at start but I can kind of do it in tandem with option 2.

If you have the time and mental bandwidth go with 2+3. More revenue streams is always better plus if you are spending time doing something you really enjoy you'll be a lot happier.

I find the process of building businesses to be more enjoyable than running successful ones. If you're the same way, once you feel you're done building the manufacturer business you can sell it and devote more time to the design firm assuming you still really enjoy it.

In my experience the lighting rep route is much more likely to be successful between 1 and 3. With fixutres being such a saturated market I would believe it to be pretty hard to break into. If you have designs already have you thought of licensing them to a manufacturer to get royalties?

On the rep side of things the smaller reps I have seen most successful have either had a very small niche that only they can service or offered an add on that no one else had. Village Controls is a good example with the DANBox.

Is it too much to do all 3?

Feels like you could provide a one stop shop if I'm understanding correctly...

Unfortunately other designers would stop working with an agency who also did design.

That makes sense, thanks for clarifying.

Shoot your shot. Feels like 2&3 is a good move!
