To this point, it's going to be a different answer for everyone, so it does really depend on what your long term career goals are and what you enjoy.

The answer to this question could be a book. Bottom line, are you in the selfish phase of your career or the selfless phase? The first - IC, snd the latter - AE leader.

Agree with @LordBusiness here. I’m choosing to climb the IC ladder as high as possible until I have a family, and can’t handle the stressors/risk of AE life.

Team leader but remain an IC.

Do you trust the people you would manage? I got put over a bunch of stoners and bimbos and they were all in another planet and untrainable.
I’d rather have my own success/failure than idiots lacking work ethic possibly dictate my future pay checks…

Managing a team for the experience and you can always go back to IC

You're right in that there are pros and cons to both. When I moved into management the major con was the added stress of having to escalate and deal with everyone else's problems. A pro was getting to be involved with group leadership on strategic decision making for the company.

As an IC a pro is usually higher earning potential (commission), but a con can be living in an isolated role and not being involved with bigger company-wide decisions.

Yesss! This is so true. My entire team comes to me for help vs their own managers anyway ( that’s a story for another day) so I’m hoping that part may come a little easier. But I am def worried about making less money overall as a manager vs IC.

Hey if you can handle (and even enjoy) everyone coming to you during crunch time at EOM and EOQ, it sounds like management might be your cup of tea!

Had this conversation so many times times with friends! We are all roughly the same level of experience and in the last two years we've all gone in different directions- GM, sales strategy and having done all the above - I most recently went down IC route. Depends on what you want, what pressures you wanna handle (/can be bothered to deal with) and what's a priority to you.
I got two young kids so wanna control what i'm doing, focusing my time on earning $ while working on interesting projects w clients.

So Helpful! Thank you! I think the hardest thing i would have to stomach is how to rally and motivate a team to get behind a retention/upsell quota I know is likely going to be unattainable. For context I’m on agency only accounts and our quotas were dramatically raised this year ( some quarters retention quota was 110-120% this year). Agencies are very tough to work with.

People leadership is hard, choose your poison well.

Leading folks looks easy on the outside and will keep you awake at night.

Indy Con is where you can shine, if you can keep up the momentum. One bad month and you're looking like a bad hire...
