(whispering) What if your boss sucks…

It’s a question a lot of people ask, (very quietly.)

Sales savages love to give career advice about three things, and that’s hitting quota, getting promoted, and getting paid. But what do you do when you’ve got the skills, you’ve got the momentum, you’ve got the job, and your boss just… well… sucks?

That’s why we wrote a new article on Bravado Academy for when your boss is, ahem, a full blown sociopathic psycho. Or maybe just disorganized or rude. We break down all the advice you’ll need to make peace with your workplace, get ready to use the job as a stepping stone to somewhere better, or just get the hell out of there.

Read Dealing with a Bad Boss today and tell your boss they can go to hell (we don’t tell you to do that please don’t do that.)

I have had the misfortune of working for managers who were not just awful managers but also awful people (one bragged in private about taking advantage of a vulnerable intern). Much more sneaky, plotting, and sociopathic. Unlike the ones you listed, they were able to woo potential hires and fool HR as well. At startups, these types are very common (don't join Series A startups folks). I'd also look for any form of virtue signaling as the biggest giveaway.

Due to how much working for bad people ruined my sanity early in my career, I have found somewhat of a metric to potentially differentiate a good manager from a crap one. Simply look at their past history and see what happened to people at the companies they managed at.

Did a good chunk get promoted or was it only like 2 or 3 (always nepotism)?

Do not feel bad about asking people who used to work for them, cold call if that is what it takes. One thing, if you hear any sort of "no comment" or "I'd rather not talk about it", that is just as bad if not worse.

Sometimes, prevention really is the best cure.

Forced charity to their cause du jour (in their name no less) to make them look good is another red flag folks. And small co CEO's do this to new employees as a bullying tactic.

Great article, I've been secretly asking myself this, and I don't if I should ask others. My hunch is that I'm taking things a bit too personal at times, and that's how my self doubt starts working hahahahahaha

It's a game. You just have to manage up and play the game. In life we have to sometimes be involved with insufferable jackasses.

The thing to consider is this, if you ally yourself with a manager all of your teammates hate, you will be in a position to get promoted over everyone else.

Had a manager flat out admit he was phoning it in for the first 7 months as a manager as he was cracking down on us to increase output.

It always seems like "bad bosses" come and go, unless they own the company and then good employees come and go.

Many managers in sales only care if you hit your numbers.  Some will go above and give you the tools and help mentor you, but that's few and far between.  Most consider you a number and as long as you as that number hits your goal they will keep you

Mt current boss is a great guy but isn’t much of a boss or manager. And he resists requests which put him place as a manager. It’s frustrating. I typically don’t need a “manager” but I definitely need a someone who’s working internally to help with my success.

love the write up! I needed it.

Being around toxic bosses does affect your mental health, self-confidence.. Importantly I feel I stopped having the conversations that are crucial for my own growth.

No one get's up in the morning to do a bad job... Just that some bosses don't have patience or a reason to invest / care to make it work with open mind.

Every manager has responsibility on their head which makes them go mad on their team. Mine was average never had an issue with Manager and now being a manager I try not to be bad boss on my team

My last boss was a secret raging psychopath (and I knew him prior & had no idea) & this one is a disorganized nightmare who has risen to his level of inadequacy. My CEO picker is way way off and I need to get out of this job that feels like corporate punishment & I deserve credit for time served in the last job.
