Question
Post

Who is the most famous person you’ve ever met in person?

I thought this might be an interesting off-topic discussion.

Being in sales, part of the job is to be adept and in control during social situations... How much of this goes out the window when you meet someone famous?

Were you able to keep your cool or did you lose your composure and get lost in your fandom?

The Pope.

My wife and I traveled to Rome shortly after we were married. The Vatican, at the time, had a special program for newlyweds called Spousa Noveli. It helped if you knew some right people, but you were given access to a reserved section at the Pope’s weekly audience in St. Peter’s Square.

This was in 2006, when it was Pope Benedict XVI.

After his audience, he greeted the people in this section and my wife and met him, shook his hand and had about a 90 second conversation with him. Regardless of your beliefs, it’s a surreal experience. He was very engaging, genuine and carried a very humble presence.

Will never forget it and have the pics to prove it!

Wish they included the ability to post media in comments/replies. Pics of people's famous interactions would be cool...although I guess that "outs" the person by showing a pic of themself. Lol

Other cases I've kept my cool, but I think my whole body reverted back to the age of 16 including my social intelligence.

@CadenceCombat she was super sweet! This was a while back, and her mom was with her - nicest lady. But I would imagine it gets old being famous so perhaps we just caught her on a good day!

I've met a lot. Billy Joel, Adam Sandler, William H Macy, several sports legends, Howard Stern, Tommy Lee, and several others. I ran an upscale clothing store in a very popular celebrity resort town so it happened alot. I had to keep my cool as they were a customer and I'm a Profesional damn it, lol. Sometimes it's hard for sure.

He was so annoying honestly. He kept talking about the origin of the Skull and Crossbones and was so far off. Lol. The dude is funny and definitely didn't buy anything cause we didn't carry any JV lol. William H Macy is as nice as they come, this is pre shameless or I may not have been able to be as cool.

I’ll start it off...

Mike Myers - He wrote a book about what it means to be Canadian and I decided to attend his book signing.

The first thing I noticed was his full head of silver hair because you normally don’t see him with his natural hair colour in movies. He had a very modest and humble demeanor.

There was a mom with some kids ahead of me and he spent a handful of minutes with them doing the Shrek voice and it was really sweet.

When my turn came to meet him, I was kind of nervous and felt like I didn’t know the etiquette or just how not to seem like a bumbling idiot... I have a lot of reverence for SNL but I didn’t want to repeat the same question he’s heard a million times about his work 20 years ago...

So I basically told him that I loved his role in Inglorious Basterds and I asked him what it was like to work with Michael Fassbender and he said that Fassbender was an absolute masterclass of an actor.

I then awkwardly and suddenly turned to the camera for a picture and went on my way. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I met Michael Jordan in the late '90s at Drink in Chicago.  Almost shit myself but I'd like to think I played it cool.  Inside I was freaking out.

Also met Eddie Vedder at a benefit for epilepsy research a few years ago.  That was top notch.

He rolls with a 4-5 man body guard team. All body guards are massive humans. You can’t get close. Tipped the waitress in Miami with a “roll” of what I can assume were hundreds. In Atlanta he was with Mark Warburg who is much shorter than you realize. In Atlanta I was at the lobby bar at the same time one of his body guards was shot in the leg in the hotel driveway- an actual drive by shooting  in buck head -arguably one of the nicest areas of Atlanta- news said some sort of nightclub dispute.

Hakeem "the Dream" Olajuwon

Not the most famous person I've ever, BUT I met him when I was 13, right after his 2nd NBA championship. It was in Bloomsburg, PA. My friends and I were staying at a Holiday Inn with our dads the night before a Muslim youth basketball summer camp started.

My best friend and I were playing arcades (remember those!?), Virtual Fighter and Tekken, around 1am. After getting quarters for dollar bills over and over, we made friends with the front desk guy. He let us in on a secret: Hakeem is staying in the hotel and his wake up call is at 5am for his ride to the airport.

Turns out he was flying out the morning BEFORE the camp started because of a scheduling mistake. Meanwhile, the whole reason we signed up for the camp was to meet and shoot around with him.

So this was our only chance. We tipped toed around everyone sleeping in our room to find our basketball cards. The Holiday Inn had a Presidential Suite, and our inside guy told us that was his room. We paced outside his door until we couldn't wait any longer, and knocked at 3:30am.

He was so tall we couldn't see his face until he ducked his head, stepped through the door, and into the hallway. There he was in Hanes, eyes squinting, asking us what was wrong. We just blurted out "Assalamualaikum Mr. Olajuwon! We heard you had to leave before the camp started. Would you please sign these cards for us?"

He was so cool about it. We borrowed a Sharpie from the front desk and handed him 3 cards. We exchanged a few more words. He apologized for missing the camp. We apologized for waking him up 1:30 hours early. And the he ducked back into his room. I still have 2 of the signed cards to this day.

Here’s another...

Bruce Campbell - Met him at a Comicon event and asked him a question about an obscure TV show he did called ‘The Adventures of Brisco County Jr.’ just to hit him up with a question he maybe didn’t hear before.

I asked him ‘what was it like to ride that rocket on the railway?’ and he went on to say how fun it was because it was a real practical effect and he actually was riding this contraption. I already knew that because I watched the special features on the DVD box set but my friend and I were both in awe that Bruce Campbell was talking to us and giving us an enthusiastic answer.

Total class act. Great handshaker.

I met Gillian Anderson at the same event and she was lovely.

I met Hootie and the Blowfish one summer while I was driving the beer cart on a golf course.

Darius Rucker drove his cart straight into one of the ponds.

I rushed over with a few of the golf pros to help pull him out. Then I handed him a beer.

So many in my previous career.

For names you’d know:

Onassis, Bloomberg, Gates, Springsteen, Madonna, Spielberg, Sellek, Saudi Royals... those come immediately to mind. There’s more but I’m on a Peloton rn 😂

then in the business world, basically everyone with a net worth over 50M.

You know what’s awesome? Springsteen is the best dad ever. He would ALWAYS come support his daughter (which usually meant his was high af from smoking a bowl and passed out on a bench in the spectator section but whatever! He was physically present instead of just sending me a kid and a blank check).

Onassis was bat shit crazy. I met her in Arezzo, Italy. Loved those trash romance novels. 🤷‍♀️

I met Mark Cuban at Bill’s Gambling Hall (now The Cromwell) in summer 2006.
He was drinking pitchers of beer at the main casino bar.  I didn’t realize it was him as I walked up to the bar to get a drink.
Then my buddy was like “that’s Mark fuckin Cuban sitting right next to you”
I turned around and said “Hi Mark, I’m salesninja.  The Mavs are had a great season”
Then I looked around and 4 Mavericks were shooting craps.
That was literally the last place on the strip that I would imagine seeing those guys.

He was kind of a dick about it which I did not take personally.

But he proceeded to walk and talk for 5 minutes and answer my question about what it takes to be successful.

"Build something people would be stupid not to use" and "Then spend all your time and energy building that"

He was with his 5 kids and he just wanted to spend time with them. However, at the Super bowl almost everyone is a celebrity, a retired pro athlete or a diehard sports fan. I was the only one who approached him. Maybe today in 2021 he would get a lot more attention than in 2016.

Pretty cool to be able to say I met Elon.
