Whole BDR team got laid off, feeling bad for my ex colleagues

Hey team, nothing big just feeling bad for my old team.

My old BDR team was..dysfunctional at best. 3 managers in a year. Everything was kind of messy, but I had been there the longest. I was playing around and travelling remotely breaking policy but I knew the consequences so when time came around they let me resign which is fine, me my manager and few others got the same severance at the same time, really just needed an excuse.

Here's the kicker though, in feb this year they Nuked the entire BDR team from EMEA, my very first manager, friend who i had recommended, and a bunch of other people I really liked. I feel bad for them because they we're quite young, inexperienced and had never really gotten a taste of corporate politics before.

Lot of them still out of a job at the moment, few of them straight up left sales to try and become devs.

I guess it's just a message for everyone that office politics matters and you can lose your job at any time, just feeling sad for the team at large.

I think youโ€™re conflating office politics and inept leadership.

You can play the game all you want, but when money is tight or running out it doesnโ€™t matter how friendly you were with the CEO. I got laid off after the co-founder recruited me himself 6 months prior.

If theyโ€™ve been out since Feb they are either a) bad at their jobs and cannot find a role in sales or b) are living just fine on sevvy.

I feel bad that people are laid off, but I stop feeling bad when people donโ€™t get their shit together immediately and use their job skills to get back on payroll. Iโ€™ve had to do it 3 times in 13 months.

Anyways, I might be a cynicโ€”but they need to figure it out.

I'm with you on this. i feel bad when ppl get laid off. and i have had good friends who i know are good at their job struggle to find new roles.

But for the most part, if you are good at your job you will find work quickly.

Yeah, I mean, I do feel like I'm not good at my job (or, the job I used to have) I felt like I was getting by on effort and just putting purpose in everything I did, and most people in most companies just don't do either of those things. Kinda felt like I was only flying like an eagle because I was surrounded by turkeys. Which is why a big part of me isn't surprised that I'm still unemployed after almost a year.

But year, you're right, the company will cut down anyone and everyone to survive, whether you're buddies with the CEO or not.

When I was laid off in 2022, they cut the whole AE team (well those of us who were left after the last layoff round 6 weeks earlier). Their problem was structural, not managerial. Company was almost entirely debt-financed (on 6 month debt contracts), had a pricing model that was pay as you go (no contracts, no commitments), and kept pushing new products and features that never actually functioned. Figures they had one of those Harvard MBAs as CEO.

Another company I used to work for recently cut their entire US operations and moved everything back to Canada. We're talking managers cut, low achievers, president's club dudes, support and development staff, and everything in between. I was downright shocked when I saw the news.

Something you touched on though, the managerial carousel. The rapid growth we saw in tech up through 2022-23 meant that a lot of people got into management who weren't ready and often never even worked under a good manager themselves before getting promoted. That kind of chaos isn't good for early career development.

Layoffs have less to do with office politics and more to do with irresponsible or inept hiring practices
