Question
Post

Why are repeat posts so frowned upon?

So I get not wanting to hash out the same things time and again, but I don't understand why it's not okay to recycle some content, or ask similar things but in a different way? Our experiences shape our answers, and as time goes on and we have more of those experiences, it's likely we'll submit different responses depending on our current situation- right? wrong?

I think it depends on the topic of the post.ย

The ones I downvote are the boring yes/no or totally irrelevant questions. Like, is apple vs android so interesting that it needs to be asked more than once? Same with the favourite music/movie posts...there have been SO many that got a lot of traction I don't think it needs to be brought up every week.

Repeated discussion posts are more acceptable within reason. If it was just asked two weeks ago, no it doesn't need to be asked again. But if it's been several months and it's an interesting discussion where people's experiences may have changed I'm ok with it.

New posters need to understand this place has been active since January or so, so a lot of the original members have seen the "what's your favourite closing song" post twice a week for six months now and it gets annoying after a while, especially when the search bar is available. New posters should also think about why they're posting a thread...is it to get a lot of replies to earn commission or because they want to contribute knowledge or ask a question that will spark insightful discussion? People who are doing the first one, especially repeatedly are easily sniffed out and will get downvoted.ย

That's great perspective, thanks! I feel like a lot of the time I see repeat posts I only know it because someone pointed it out. However I'm not nearly as active on here as others, so I really on pay attention to the recent & trending posts. So I'm sure I miss a lot.ย

What I haven't missed is what sin repeat posts areย ๐Ÿ˜‚

I agree with this perspective. I'm likely guilty of repeat posts of certain threads/topics, however I try to see if its been posted/discussed before among the community/how recent a post was. Last thing I want to do is slap a thread together that was posted 5 days ago.

Why not continue the original thread by "bumping" it to the top? Tag relevant people in a comment on the original post and then you'll have all relevant viewpoints and thoughts in the same place.

Not a bad idea, but I think a learning curve on here is to be expected given how new the platform is.

That's why we comment with the existing threads and mega threads of common topics that are repeated.

Agreed. I think people are too hard on each other for asking questions from different viewpoints. Just don't click on it and move on, if you have seen it beforeย

If the post is a carbon copy of another one, I usually try to link the original(s).

If it is close but maybe worded differently, while I may link the original to try and help the poster (if someone asks for a recommendation, and there is an existing thread with 50+ comments, I am sure they would want to see it as well), I will still upvote and comment because the new nature of the question may solicit different responses and is still valuable.ย

Certain topics though (books, movies, music, certain war room features, and emails) have been beaten to death over and over and over and over so those normally are the ones the community downvotes right away.ย

great point- I've never seen any that I thought were too similar to add value, but I also have a shit memory and probably wouldn't ever notice unless it was on the same day. Ha!

A few months from now you will haha. But again, unless it is worded exactly the same, I still comment and engage as well as linking the OG because you may get new people commenting on it that did not see the original.ย

Then I should add- even if you search it but use the wrong term... you're still fucked and can get yourself called out for something you didn't purposely do.ย

If it's made abundantly clear the search bar was not used, I will help out with a link to check out.

It's written in the pinned FAQs to utilize the search bar. We can learn together.

I guess my perspective lies more within the professional development topics- and less with the 'fun' conversations. I'm a big fan of seeing all sorts of perspectives/input, so snuffing out potential discussions because someone posted something similar seems a bit harsh. But at the time I know that doesn't scale well.ย

Just wondered where everyone's thoughts on the topic fell.ย

Depends on the topic being discussed and when it was last discussed. If someone just posted yesterday about the same topic itโ€™s kind of like come on and thereโ€™s same day repeats constantlyย

I agree with you! I don't mind repeat posts! New ideas, fresh insights, etc.

Only issue i see with that is the magnitude of posts on a forum like this, spending the extra time to filter through them vs re-asking and helping others in the community sort of a double edged sword i guess

it has to be a good post for me to consider recycling the content. A pet hate of mine is seeing all these trashy motivational posts you get on LI
