Why do people tend to look down on sales?

The pay is good, and commission is great! Its a great career if you work for a solid place.

I think it stems from the greasy, sleezy, used car salesman stereotype. ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ

This is so depressing because I feel like there is a huge focus to push away from that at any half decent company

Oh definitely but I think thatโ€™s still the first image that comes to mind with most people when you say โ€œsalesโ€ unfortunately.

Absolutely because of the car salesmen stereotypes. Unfortunately. But remember they only look down on us until they realise they need us to sustain the company and make it profitableย

100 years of bad experiences.ย  There is a large portion of sellers out there that ruin it for the rest of us and give us a bad rep.ย  Also the variability/ unpredictability and stress can drive a lot of people crazy

Yeah, tech seem to think this...yet can't keep up when sales bring in a tonne of new customers and then they have to make a 'Story on Jira' to figure it out.ย

Generally because they've had a bad experience personally. Part of the job is overcoming bias and gaining trust. Our profession isn't boring for sure.

Stereotypes - greasy used car salesman, annoying door to door vacuum cleaner reps, and telemarketers. There are also a lot of shoddy sales people out there who are pushy, dishonest, or scammy that give the rest of us a bad reputation.

I also think sales is just not talked about enough to young people when they're looking at a career. It's either college, trades, entrepreneurship... Rarely do people even remember sales is even an option, and if they do they only think of car sales or retail sales.

Lastly I think a lot of people are turned off from sales due to the demand of the position. Tons of rejection, longer than normal hours, high stress, dealing with humans all day, you need to embrace confrontation and the word "no." This makes the majority of people uncomfortable.ย

Man I hate this but my cousin has this deeply entrenched belief that ill say w/e or lie to get money not me but any salesmen are dishonest untrustworthy people. Somehow weird because I keep advising him on good things I do for myself, like I have a subaru xv he got one, I have a samsung he got one. Then he hates me for it.ย

They always associate us with snake oil. Something that travelled all the way to Egypt...thanks America.

Serious note though a lot are bothered by the fact that they feel our job is just calling people and keep nagging on them. They ignore that there is a science, contracting, roi we calculate we do to present the value.

Yeah it's to do with the sleazy salesman stereotype. I cop it from my housemates all the time. I think the irony is that they all love to travel, so they save all their money and dump it into getaways/backpacking trips while I have a fully remote job which allows me to travel and work If I want to I just choose not to and stay in my city/work.ย

Well, what do you do when you get a random cold call? Or five in one day? And it's the same annoying dribble? (not that you do that or we do that).ย
